Be it known that I, EDWARD F. KUN/Urn, n citizen of the United Stntes, residing in Jer sey (lity, in. the county. of Hudson :ind Starte of ew Jersey, have invented certain new end useful Improvements in Type-VVriting ltlzichines, of which the following is e specifi.- cstion.
This invention relntesto the ribbon mechnnisin of type-writing machines, and pertieulerly to means for bringing into use different colors of ribbon at will. Y n
I provide two or more seperate ribbons of different colors and movable independently of one another to cover the printingpoint. In the preferred form of the invention the ribbons are superposd or placed one in front of another in iront of the plsten and means are provided for causing either ribbon to cover and uncover the printing-point during the type-strokes, while the other ribbonremeins idle. The s ecial ribbon may be caused to feed back and forth by means of a bevel-pinion 37 on the spool-shaft 9, meshing with a bevelgear'38u on a horizontal shaft 39, which is connecte by .bevel-pinions 39IL and 32*l with the spoo 32. The ribbon 31 is threaded through a ribboncarrier 40, mounted directly behind the carrier 23 and having ears 41 tol embrace a fixed vertical guide 42, which lin said inachine is the ty e-guiding post. The carrier 40 is pivoted at its lower end to a lever 45, similar to the lever and `alongside thereof and pivoted u on the shoulder 26 and having an upwar ly-extended arm 4 6, provided with a projecting Y in 47, whereby it is operated..
It will e seen that the ribbon-guiding pins a of the carrier 40 are set in line with the forked main portion of said carrier to correspond with t e direction taken by the ribbon 51 which extends substantially straight across the machine, while the pins 23a of the front carrier 23 are set forward ot' the fork of said carrier to correspond with the forward and outward direction taken by the ribbon ofthe spools 7 8. shiftable along the bracket 48 and being held upon said plate by shoulder-screws 55, which are inserted with a horizontal slot 56 in said vertical late 54, said slot enabling the actuators to e shifted or adjusted hori- Zontally across the reciprocating table 21, whereby either actuator 50 or 51 may engage its associated lever-pin 47 .or 30, so as to vibrate either lever-45 or 25, and hence to throw up either ribbon 31 or 6 to cause the saine to cover the printingoint during the operation of the types, whi ev the other ribbon remains idle. At Fig. 1 the actuator 50 is shown in engagment with the lever-pin 47, and the lever is elevated. The arm 29 of the other lever rests against astop 57, fixed upon the shift-rail 58, vsaid stopv serving for beth levers when they are idle.
The necessary shifting of the actuators is effected by a link 59, pivoted at 60 to an ear formed upon the actuator member and eX- tending toward the right-hand side of the machine, being there pivoted at 61 to a bellcrank 62 and vibrating idly about said pivot 61 during the backward and forward recipro cations of the table 21.` From the bell-crank extends forwardly a link 63 to a nger-lever or bell-crank 64, mounted at the front of the machineover the keyboard. By raising the lever64 the link 63 is thrown back, the bell-l crank 62 vibrates,'the link 59 is thrown to thel left, the actuator 50V is shifted out of engagrnent with the pin 47, and the actuator -51 is shifted into engagement with the pin 30, "so that the lever 25 will thereafter be vibrated during the typestrokes and the ribbon 6 thrown upto cover the rintingpoint, while the ribbon 31 remains i le. tain the actuators in .either position, I provide a spring-detent 65 upon the framework 66 to engage notches 67, formed upon the bell-crank 62.
It is usual in said Underwood machine to shift the platen up, as at l, Fig. 3, to enable the upper-case characters to print. For Vthis ur ose a shifting frame is provided, of whic '1 t e shift-rail 28 forms a part. The platen 1 is journaled upon a platen-frame, (not shown,) which has a roll 68 to run upon said shift-rail 28. The latter Iis shifted up to 28a, Fig. 3, at the case-shifting o eration, and' with it rise the bracket 27, the levers 25 and 45, and the ribbon-carriers 23 and 40, together with the ribbons carried thereby, the deep vertical slots 52 'and `53 in the ri bon-actuators accommodating the up-anddown shift movement ofv the' lever-pins 47 30. Thus the operation of causing either ribbon to cover the printing-point atv the typestrokes is carried on the same whether the platen is shifted up or down.
Having thus described :my invention, I claim-- 1. In a type-Writing machine comprising type-operating keys, and a universal bar operated by said keys, the combination with means for Winding a plurality of separate ink-ribbons, of means-for enabling said universal bar to move either of said ribbons to cover and uncover the printing-point independently of the other ribbon.

In a type-writing machine comprising type-operating keys, and a universal bar conn trolled by said keys, the combination o? a plurality of sets of ribbon-spools so placed that the ribbon carried by one set of spools is normally superposed near the printing-point by the ribbon carried by theother set ot spools, and means adjustable by the operator for causing said universal bar to move either of said ribbons to cover the printing-poing While the other ribbon remains motionlcs llfIn a type-Writing machine conniirising` type-operating keys, anda universal bar controlled by said keys, the combination with means for supporting` ribbons so that they lie in superposed relation near the printing;-`

8. In a type-Writing machine comprising a set of types, and a member which reciprocates at the strokes of all the types, the comriers one means for operatively' connecting either ot said ribbon carriers lo said reciprocating member, at will, and simultaneously discennecting the other oi said ribbon-carriors .trom said reciproca ting 1n einher.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination with typesand a platen, of a plurality of ribbon-vibrating levers having projecting pins, a member reciprocating at the typestrokes., an actuator mounted upon'said reciprocating member and having openings for engaging said pins one at a time, means for adJusting said actuator, and means for detaining it in engagement with either of said 17. In a type-Writing machine, the combination with types and la platen, of a lurality of ribbon-carriers, levers connecte to said carriers, a member reciprocating at the typestrokes, actuators mounted upon said reciprocatin member and connectible to eitherof said levers at will, a iinger-piece mounted upon the framework of the machine, means connecting said finger-piece to said actuators, and means for detaining said actuators in position for operating either one or the other of said levers.

In a type-writingr machine provided with a ilaten, a shiftable platen-frame, and types, t 1e combination of a plurality of ribbon-vibrating devices including parts mounted upon said platen-shifting` frame, and moans for causing either of said vibrating devices to operate at the operation of the types While the other of said vibrating devices remains idle.
29. ln a type-writing machine provided with a platen, a shiltable platen-frame, and types, the combination of a pluralityY oi'V levers pivoted upon said shiftable frame, a frame mounted to reciprocate at the type-strokes, actuators mounted upon said reciprocatingj)` frame and shiftablc so as to operate either one or thc other ol' said levers, and ribbonearriers operable by said levers.
