METHOD OF MANUFACTURING GLUE AND'GELATIN FROM BONES- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMANN HILBERT, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at Ileufeld, Upper Bavaria, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Manufacturing Glue and Gelatin from Bones, of which the following is a specification.
I have found that bones contain organic nitrogenous bases or their salts, (picolin and the like,) which are soluble in water and which if not removed before the further treatment of the bones impart to the glue produced from thema disagreeable odor and deteriorate its quality. Besides their bad odor these substances also attract water, which hygroscopic property is also imparted to the g ue containing the substances. The beforeinentioncd bases cannot easily be removed from the coarse-broken bones usually employed in the manufacture of glue. A treatment extending over a comparatively-long time (which would be necessary for coarsebroken bones) would cause putrefaction of the glue or gelatin, so that this method can not be carried through without the employmcnt of an antiseptic, such as sulfurous acid or the like.
I have now found that substances containcd in the bones and causing the putrefaction and impairing the quality of the glue and gelatin-like nitrogenous and other acids,
bases, or salts of organic or inorganic nature may be easily removed from the bones by washing or filtering the substances with water from the bones, having been ground to a flour, before treating the bones in the usual manner with acids for bleaching and macerating and before boiling them for extracting the glue. in which the ones are first of-all bleached invention results in not only a great economy of chemicals, which are used for thefollowing bleaching and macerating process, but also causes that the treatment of the bones with chemicals to prevent putrefaction is superfluous. This washing process only requires a short time, so that no chemicals to prevent putrefaction need be added, which is a very great advantage, as such chemicals are known to have a very unfavorable influence upon the final roduct.
According to'my improved method it is no longer necessary to employ acids or other chemicals as additions to-the glue extracted from the bones; Only when it is desired to obtain colorless Inc a small quantity ofsulfurous acid may e added to effect the decoloration.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved process for manufacturing glue from bones which consists in washing first of all with water from the bones, having been ground to a flour, the putrescent substances, like nitrogenous and other acids, bases or salts of organic and inorganic nature, after which the bone-flour is treated in the usual manner with bleaching agents and the glue.
