UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERCY JACKSON, OF MACON, GEORGIA, AS SIGNOR TO J. S. SCHOFIELDS SONS (10., OF MACON, GEORGIA.
,RE TORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed 0mm 11, 1905." sel-aim). 282,264.
To all whom itmtay concern:
. Be it known that I, PERCY J AGKSON, a citizen of the United' States, and a resident of Macon, in the county of-Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Retort, of whichthe following is a full, clear, I
and parts andcombinations of the same,
which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims. A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corre- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 1 1 of F i 2, showing the retort in the position for filling. Fig.
2 is a sectional plan ,view of the same on;the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. tional sideelevation o the devicefor fastening the cover. in positionon the body of the retort. F ig. 4 is a reduced sectional plan view of the same on the line 4'4 of Fig.3, and
1 F .'5 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the steam-inlet trunnion. v
The vesselA of the turpentine apparatus is preferably made cylindrical, permanently closed. at one end, and provided at the other end with a. removable-cover B ,to allow of filling the vessel-A with the wood tobe treat-.
ed at the time the vessel A is in a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1,- th e'said cover when removed also allowing dumping of the residue after the extracting process is completed and the retort is swung into-an inverted positionthat is, with the'cov'er B lower most. The vessel A is rovided-on'i'ts'sides with-hollow trunnions' and D, mounted to turnin suitable bearings E and E, and on the trunnion) is secured a gear-wheel F, in
mesh with ion F, secured on a shaft F, v adapted to urned so as to rotate the gear- Fi 3 is an enlarged sec-1 to v be' carried ratus.
wheel F' and the trunnion C with a view to swing the vessel A either into a vertical posh tion, as shown in Fig. 1, and with the cover B uppermost for, filling the vessel A with the wood or to swing the vessel A into a horizontal position during thetime the process of distillation is carried out or to swing the ves- Patented Oct. 9, 1906..
sel A' into. an inverted vertical position with the coverB lowermost for dumpin The trunnions C and D are provided at their outer ends with stuffing-boxes Ccand D, through whichextend pipes G and H, of which the'pipe G is connected \\'i tli a boiler w the i'esi' due incident to the process of distillation;
or similar source of steam-supply and the pipe H is connected witha condenser or like apparatus for carrying the vapors arising from the destructive distillation to the 0011- wise in the vessel A adjacent to; the innersurface thereof, as plainly indicated in- Figs. '1' and 2. .Bythe arrangement described the steam passing through-thepipe G enters the hollow-trunnion O and passes by the outlet 0, pipe 1-, and branch pipe J into the perforated pipes J ,to then pass intothev interior of the vessel A to act on the wood containedtherin with-a view to extract the turpentine vcontained inthe wood. It is understoodthat steam is admitted to the pipes J at the time the vessel A is in a horizontal position, and the pipes J extend along the bottom of the vessel.
The trunnion D has an inlet D, connectedby a pipe K with the interior of the vessel A at a point directly -0 posite the pipes J, so that when the vesse Ais in a horizontal position and steam is admitted to the same, as above described, then the vapors arising from the process of distillation 1pass into the pipe'K at the top of'the vesse pass through the trunnion D into the pipe H' to a condenser or other appa The cover B is removablv held-on the end of the vessel A, preferably bythei use of eye-- bolts l1, and in order to insure a'tight joint between the cover B and the end of the vessel A, I provide the cover with an annular V-shaped B, fitting a correspon din'gly A to finally shaped annular roove A, arranged at the end of the vesse A, (see Figs. 1. and 3,) a suitable packing N being preferably interposed between'the bottom of the rib B and a the bottom of the groove A.
The operation is as follows: When the cover B 1s removed and the vessel A is in a vertical position, then the wood or like material can be readily placed in position in the vessel A, and when the latter is filled with .the wood then the cover B is secured in place toclose the vessel A The latter isnow swung into a horicontal position, so that. the
perforated pipes J are at the bottom, while the-entrance opening tothe pipe K is at the itop; Steam 1s now permittedto pass by way of the perforated pipes-l intothevessel: to act onthe-wood' contained thereinwith' a view to carry onthe destructive distillaoffi'by the pipe K, pi e- H to: a condenser or After the process of dis is completed the steam is shut off,
end 0 the-vessel'downw-ard; so: that the residue-0t the process of. distillation is dumped 1111308 conveying-trough or the like for carryer this-has been done the-vessel A can returned to, the original position to allow refilling and then the above-described operation is-repeated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the retort can be quickly filled with the wood or vother substance tobe treated and the. destruct1ve process of distillationcan be carlied on and the residuethereof'dumped' in a comparatively short-time and without requirlngskilled labor:
'Lhe apparatusis very sim 1e and durable in' construction and is-not lia 'le' to get easily Having thus described my invention, I
claim as=new and desire' to secure by Letters L A retort for'the-destruot'ive distillation: of wood, comprisinga closedvessel having a 50 removable cover at oneend, hollow trunnionson the sides of the vessel approximately trunnions being connected with a steamsupply, perforated pipes arranged parallel liligb'the residue tea suitable placeof discharge. i e
at the middle thereofi, one of the the inner surface, a transverse pipe withinthevessel and connecting said perforated pipes, a pipe leading from said transverse pipe to the outside of the vessel and connecting with the trunnion connected with the steam-supply, and a connection between the other trunnion and the interior ofthe vessel at a point opposite the said perforated ipes.
2. A retort for the destructive disti ation of wood, comprising a closed cylind'ricalvessol having a removable cover at one end, hollow trunnions at opposite sides' oi the vessel approximately at the middlethereof, the said trunnions'being' mounted to turnin suitable bearingsto bring the vessel into a vertical position for filling, into a horizontal position for carrying, on the: destructive process of distillation, and into an inverted position-for dumping the residue of theprocess of distillation, one of said trunnionsbe ing connected with a steam -supply and previded with an integral lateral outlet, two: perforated: parallel pipes within the vessel, the pipes extending lengthwise oi the vessel at. one-side-thereof and adjacent to the-inner surface, the said'perforatecl pipes extending along the bottom ofthe vessel when the latter is in the horizontal position for carrying on the process of distillation, a transverse branch' pipe within the vessel and con necting the perforated pipes at or near the middle thereof, a pipe leading from the: branch pipe to the exterior of the vessel and connecting with the lateral outlet of the trunnion connected with the steam-supply, the other trunnion being the outlet-trunnion for the escape of-the-vapois, and having an jintegralilateral inlet, a pipe'leading from the interior'of the vessel at apoint opposite the said: perforated pipes and connected with the lateral inlet of said outlet-trunnion, and means for forming a tight joint between the said cover and the corresponding end of the vessel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence-of two subscribing witnesses.
