Description

No. 832,924. PATENTED OCT. 9, 1906. M. A. ROSS. HEADLIGHT CASING. APPLICATION FILED APB.17,1906.
Int/671,507" flark P 0 1,115 whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Edema A. Ross, a oi izen of the United States, residing Chicago,
in the county of look andState f Illinois,
have invented a new and useful Improvernent in Headlight-Casings, of the foilowlng is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of locomotive headlight casings with View to facilitating the insertion and retention of the tra'hsparent disks or plates.
Patented I oianioig else: oet WSuIL one 21 modifioation she's "11in Fig. 2 on a collar 33 riveted to it, 0,

We v toe curved surr ee 1. the SDllo ii s on er o ge ea an anao .eeo sit ernooer covering 1.5, sornnng a cushionlig seet f the disk in the oonstrnotion'shown In practice frequent breakage of the glass disks or plates occurs, and as the casings have been hitherto usually constructed it has been necessaryin replacing a disk to open the casing, pass the disk into it, and then fasten it "roni the inside against its seat in the forward part or" the easing-hoist. This manner of replacing a disk has been slow and troublesome, and my object is not only to make the operation of inserting a disk more easy than hitherto, but to provide a construction of disk-retaining ineans which will hold the disk with great security and in a manner to lessen danger of Breakage from jar in thotravel of thelooomotive.
R ITiHg to t re accompanying drawings, Figure is a partly hroken VlPW in side elevation of locomotive-headlight casing in position or a looomotiife and embodying the preferred form of my invention; end Fig 2 an enlarged broken View in vertical section, taken through the frusto-oonical front or" the headlight, shoe g tion of the means for holding thetiisl -toe.
Referring to Fig. l, e is a l notive-hea-dlight easing secured in position on a ioooinotire-boiler jacketfi. The casing is provided on its front 1566 with a hollow frusto-conioal front or extension 6. The outer end of the projection 6 is open, and its outer edge is eX- panded, as shown, to form an annular curved socket '7, providing an inwan'lly-projeoting flange. Secured by rivets 8 to the inner surface of the extension and back of its socket 7 is an annular outwardly-opening seat 9, in
which is confined e cushioning-ring 10, preferably of rubber, against which the transparent disk 1] is adapted to be seated through the open end of the extension. The disk is releasahl retained against the ring 10 by means of a split Wedge-ring 12, preferably of spring metal and half-round in cross-section, the fiat side of which hears against the outer edge potion of-the disk and the s. l and 2 the split ring acts as an annuar which in expanding names the agenist its seat with great seourlty W11 dis breaks, thering 12f rigs. i and maybe contracted and Withdrawn m a {J w i; Q l. Erna headlig i s-easing, the combination easing-f so having on opening for the rtion oi a transparent lats, of seat i opening for the rear eoge portion of plate, an inwardly-pro}eeting near the outer end of the casing-front, and an expansihle and oontractihle Wedge-ring adegited to inserted through said casing o ien ig and extei'idhetween the plate and flange to ensaid flange and clamp the plate against said seat.
in a headlight-casing, the combination with a easing-face having an opening for the insertion of a transparent plate, of a resilient seat in said opening for the rear edge portion of the plate, an inwardly-projecting flange near the outer end of the casing-front, and an QXURHSlblG and contraotible Wedge-ring adapted to engage said flange to clamp the l l curved surplate against said seat. or
