Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Application filed December 16, 1905. Serial No. 291L836.
4 To all whom it may concern;
. tain new and useful Improvements in Abrasive Apparatus, of whichjthe following is. a-
the adjustable frame.
Be it known that I, OLMEDO Conrnz WY- soNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of- Guilford an State of-North Carolina, have invented cerspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in Woodworking-machines. One of its objects is to provide an abrasive band-carrying mechanism adapted to be conveniently adjusted so that the band will run in either a horizontal or vertical plane.
Another object 1s to provide in connection therewith means for supportin the band.op
posite the point where the wor is applied.
Another object is to dprovide im roved means for supporting an counterba ancing It further consists in certain details of form, combination, and'arrangement, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mechanism in osition for the band to travel in a horizonta plane. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end-view of the mechanism in same position as in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end view in position for the band:
to travel in a vertical plane. Y
A represents the base, in which is journaled a sleeve B. I J
O represents the adjustable frame attached to the sleeve B, which serves as a journal to the same, and also journaled, byrneans of an ear 0 and pin 0', .to the upri ht A of the frame A. A spring-actuated atch 0 serves by enterin one or other of a series of holes in the flange b anjysadjustable position.
D represent counterweights which enable the frame O to be conveniently moved to any desired position.
E represents the main drivin -shaft, which receives motion by means of a elt on pulley 'F. The shaft E is journaled in boxes e e,
' box e being attached indirectly to frame C through the counterweight D and box e formed integral with sleeve B, through the center of which shaft E passes.
The shaft G is mounted at right angles to shaft E in boxes 9 g and is driven from shaft E by means of beveled gears H I, which ma be either toothed or friction gears. Shaft of sleeve B to lock the frame to also carries a pulley J, which serves as a driving-lpulley for the abrasive belt K.
re resents a pulley mounted upon a studshaft carried by an adjustable plate M at the opposite end of frame O, and over which the opposite end of the belt passes. The
- plate M is pivoted at m to a platem, which slides on ways on the frame O and may be adjusted to or from pulley J by means of a screw N. Plate M may also be adjusted relative to plate m to aline pulley L by means of screws n n engaging an ear'h on plate M,
.after which the parts are locked in position by bolt h.
Frame C is provided with slots 0, bymeans of which a work support or table P and one or more belt supports or forms R may be attached to the frame and adjusted to any desired position. As shown, table P is provided with a slotted shank p, by means of which it is clam ed by bolt 1) to frame 0 and 'may be adjuste along the frame and to varying distances therefrom or detached, if desired. The form R, which will va with the character of the work to be finisheii: is shown supported upon a slotted shank R, similar to that supporting "table P. A stud-shaft 1' is pivoted by bolt 17" to the shank R, so as to be adjusted to varying angles relative thereto.
S represents a sleeve adjustable vertically and circumferentially .on shaft 1" and locked thereto by set-screw S.
T' re resents the form-holder pivoted to sleeve and locked to its adjusted position relative thereto by set-screw t. v
The form R, which is interchangeable in the holder with the other forms, may be plain or shaped .to a counterpart of the work to be treated and is preferably provided with a smooth-faced cushion. The form may thus be adjusted to any desired position relative to the belt and frame C. The rear face of the abrasive belt is drawn across the face of the form and the work pressed against the belt opposite the form, which ifthe work is of irre lar outline causes the belt to conform to t e outline of the work.
As indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, upon releas ing the latch a the frame C may beturned to any desired angle relative to thebase A, ac-
parts carried thereby. By journaling the frame at opposite ends to the may be made lighter in'weight and subject to less vibration, and by counterweighting the frame at opposite ends any torsional strain on the frame is avoided.
The mechanism herein shownis capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. I11 a mechanism of the character indicated, a frame carrying a plurality of pulleys adapted to support an abrasive band, said frame being journaled upon a horizontal axis and adjustable thereon so as to bring the axes of the band-supporting pulleys into either a horizontal or vertical position, and means for driving one of said band-supporting pulleys in whatever position it may be adjusted.
2. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a frame carrying a plurality of pulleys adapted to support an abrasive belt, said frame being journaled to opposite ends of said base upon a horizontal axis and adjustable thereon so as to permit the axes of the abrasive-belt-supporting pulleys to be adjusted into either a vertical or a horizontal position, and mechanism for driving one of said belt-supporting pulleys. 3. In a mechanism of the character indi cated, a frame carrying a plurality vof pulleys, an abrasive band carried by said ulleys, means for adjusting said frame so t at the axes ofsaid pulleys will assume either a vertical or a horizontal position, and mechanism for driving one of said pulle sin whatever position said frame may be a justed.
4. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a frame carrying a plurality of pulleys and journaled upon a horizontal axis to said base, and adjustable thereon so as to permit the axes of said pulleys to assume either a vertical or horizontal position, an abrasive belt supported upon said pulleys, means for driving one of sald pulleys to drive said abrasive belt, and a form carried by said frame adapted to support the rear face of the belt at the point Where the Work is applied.
5. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a frame carrying a plurality of pulleys and journaled upon a horizontal axis to said base and adjustable thereon so as to I permit the axes of said pulleys to assume base the frame i J I driving-shaft journaled in fixed ai base, means for transmitting motion from said driving-shaft to one of said pulleys carried by said frame to drive the abrasive belt, and a form carried by said frame adapted to support the rear face of the abrasive belt at the point where the work is applied.
6. cated, a base, a frame journaled thereto at opposite ends and adapted to be adjusted to positions varying from a horizontal to a vertical plane relative to said base, an abrasive belt, a plurality of pulleys carried by said frame adapted to support said abrasive belt,
and means for driving one of said pulleys to drive the belt.
7. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a counterweighted frame journaled thereto and adapted to be adjusted into either a horizontal or a vertical plane rel- In a mechanism of the character indiative to said base an abrasive belt, a plurality of pulleys carried by said frame and adapted to support said abrasive belt, a form carried by said frame adapted to support the rear face of said abrasive ing one of belt.
8. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a frame journaled thereto at opposite ends and adapted to be adjusted to varying positions relative to said base, counterweights carried at opposite ends of said frame, an abrasive belt, a plurality of pulleys carried by said frame adapted to support said abrasive belt, and means for driving one of said pulleys to drive the belt.
