Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
Application filed November 5, 1904. Serial No. 231,479.
To all whom it may concern:
SONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Woodworkin Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improved mechanism for use in connection with a band-saw and sanding-belt. One of its objects is to provide a machine for carrying a band-saw or abrasive band, which can be adjusted to any desired angle to facilitate its use with a greater variety of work.
Another object is to provide an adjustable work-table, guide, and forms to adapt it for use with an increased variety of work.
Another object is to provide an improved revolving form and cushion for use with abrasive bands,
It further consists in certain details of form,
' combination, and arrangement, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my 1mroved mechanism in the vertical position. ig. 2 is a central vertical section on line o fu of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the revolving form and cushion-belt. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fi 1, showing the vmechanism in a horizonta position. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the adjustable form-carriers. Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing a modification of Fig. 1.
A re resents the base in which the frame B j ourna s by means of sleeve B.
C represents the drivin -shaft, and D the i pulley, b means of whic the saw or abrasive ban is driven. t
Where an abrasive band S 1s to be used, I
- preferably emjlloy a small pulley E at the o of t posite end e 'frame B, and when a ban saw is to be employed instead of an abrasive band I preferably employ a larger pulley and shift it to the position indicated by the dotted line E, Fig. 1'.
F represents the work-table, which can be to the desired inclination by means ofthe counterpart curved surfaces f and clam ing-screw e.. The table is a so journale on stud b and clam ed to its adjusted position b screw b', whereby the table maybe swungsi ewise into and out of position, as desired.
G represents a swiveled bracket or support adjusted in which may be mounted a varietv of forms G', havin cushioned faces g, by means of which the elt may be shaped and supported, so as to finish curved and irregular edges and surfaces. Bracket G may be swung out of use in the same manner as table E.
K represents an idler held against the belt S by tension of spring c to keep the belt strained, and permit it to yield to the pressure of the work.
The frame B is preferably locked to any desired position of inclination by means of a lever M, pivoted to the base A. The forward end of the lever enters one or other of a series offnotches m in a iiange m', thereby locking the frame and base together. N repre- .sents a counterweight on frame to assist in readily shifting the frame.
Where it is desired to finish the edges of curved or scroll work, I preferably employ the modification represented in Figs. 3 and 6, consisting of a forming-roller H, mounted on shaft h and clamped between flanges h', so that the roller may be changed and one of different form substituted, as required. Over the roller H is a traveling cushion-belt I, the op' osite end of which passes over an idlerpu ley J, by means of which it is properly strained and held in place. J re resents a detachable frame-carrying roller and pulley J, and which is adapted to be detachably clamped to the frame B. The abrasive belt S passes overthe belt I, the two belts traveling at the same speed, preferably by reason of the frictional contact between the belts.
The device herein shown and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having described my invention, wnat I 1. In a mechanism of the character s eciied, a base, a frame located at one side t ereof and pivoted thereto,`said frame being adjustable to varying positions relative to the base, means for locking the frame to the adjusted tposition a band carrying pulley mounte upon a shaft journaled W'ithin'said pivot, and a band-carrying pulley adjustable relative to said frame.
2. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a .frame located at one side thereof and pivoted thereto, said frame-being adjustable to varying positions relative,l to the base, and. counterweighted so as to turn freely from one position to another, means for locking the frame to the adjusted position,
IIO
I or.
a pulley mounted upon a shaft journaled Within said pivot, an idler-pulley carried by and adjustable relative to the frame.
3. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a frame pivoted thereto, a pulley mounted on a shaft journaled in said pivot, a pulley carried by the frame and adjustable relative thereto, a Work-table carried by and adjustable relative to said frame.
4. In a band-carrying mechanism a frame journaled to the base, and adapted to be adjusted to varying ositions of inclination, a work-carrying tab e carried by said frame and means for adjusting the table to varying angles, and shifting it into and out of position for use.
5. In a Woodworking --machine, a frame 'provided with bandcarrying pulleys and adapted t0 be adjusted to varyingr angles of incllnation, a Work-table, and an adjustable form above said table su porting one face of the band, said Work-tab e and form being carried by said adjustable frame.
6. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a base, a frame pivoted thereto, a pulley mounted on a shaft journaled in said pivot, a pulley carried by the frame and adjustable relative thereto, and a work-table carried by said frame.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two subscribing wit- IIGSSGS. v
