JOHN s) FENNER, or WARREN,
iNMAN MANUFACTURING coMPAN RHODE ISLAND, AssrGNoR To -Lettc/rs .Patent No. 83,270, dated October` 20, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN anni The Schedule referred to in these Lettersl Patent land. making part of the saine.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, J ons S. FENNER, of Warren, in the county of Bristol, and State of Ithodelsland, have invented a new and improved Reel; and I`do exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specih'cation, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe improved reel. Figure 2 is an edge view of the same Figure 3 is a side view. Figure i is an enlarged view, arm of the reel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved mode of constructing reels which are designed oliieiy for winding silk braid and other threads, where it is important to have the reels very light and durable. The nature of my invention consists'in a scored or in dean, brule pivoted v grooved pulley or ring, having curved reel-arms extending from its face or side, the pulley and arms being constructed as hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation. y
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a ring which has a groove in its periphery, and which is connected by spokes, a a a al, yto a central hub, b, having journals formed on its ends. The said ring is made quite thin, and may be of any required diameter. It is sustained by its journals in the forked ends 'of standturned, and, whenl This ring thus conards B B, Aso that it can be readily desired, lifted out of its bearings.
structed is adapted to serve as a pulley for receiving an endless band, by which motioncan be transmitted to it from another pulley, as shown in iig. l, and it, is
also adapted to serve as a frame for supporting a number of arms, O C O C', which collectively serve as a reel. The arms are curved, as shown, so as to keep the thread in place upon them during the operation of winding or un'winding, and they may be cast solid upon one side ofthe said pulley, or cast separate, and secured to the side of the pulley, at regular intervals apart, by screws or rivets. One of the-reel arms, C', is pivoted, at c, to an ear, d, which is cast upon one side of the reel-ring A, and this arm is constructed with a curved tongue or segment, c, which passes freely' through a slot made -through the spoke a', and receives through it a pin, g. By removing pin g, the arm O can be' turned inwa and the reel thereby contracted so as to allow the removal from or the application to it of a hank or skein of thread. y It will be seen from the above description that Icombine a reel and a pulley in such manner as to form a very light and compact device', the pulley serving as such,- and also as a frame for supporting and carrying the reel-arms. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hinged arm, C', applied and retained in position, as described, in combination with the immovable arms C, and the pulley A, all construotedin the manner and for the purpose described.
` JOHN S. FENNER.
