Be it known that we, JOSEPH LANDGRAF and PHILIP B. LANDGRAF, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Screen, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to screens.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a screen of simple construction and arrangement for use in windows, doors, or the like and whereby the wire, gauze, or other netting may be readily removed and replaced when worn or injured.
Other objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists, substantially, in the construction, combination, location, and arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

The same part is designated by the same reference-sign wherever it occurs throughout the several views. v In the manufacture and use of screens for windows, doors, and other openings it frequently becomes necessary to remove and replace or renew the wire or gauze netting constituting the screen.
It is among the special purposes of our present invention to provide a construction of screen, which is simple, efficient, and inexpensive, whereby the wire or gauze netting lmay' be readily removed from its frame and replaced or renewed and clamped or secured to the frame without the necessity for employing special tools for such purpose and by even unskilled householders without requiring the services of a skilled mechanic or artisan.
rPhe frame proper of the screen is designated by the reference-sign A and comprises angle-plates riveted or otherwise secured together at their ends to form a rectangular frame. If desired, the side and end pieces of angle-plate forming the frame may be securely fastened together at the ends thereof by the angle-plates B, by rivets, or in any other suitable or convenient manner, thus forming a rigid rectangular frame with one flange of each end and side angle-plate lying in substantially the same lane, forming a surface or circumferential lange over which the ends and edges of the wire, gauze, or other netting C may be stretched. In the application of the wire or gauze netting to the frame the netting is cut to a Width and length slightly exceeding the dimensions of the rectan ular frame to which such netting is to be app ied. The ends of the netting are then V stretched and bent over the edges of the flanges D of the angle-plates, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and similarly the edges of the netting are drawn and bent over the corresponding flanges of the side pieces or angle-plates of the rectangular frame.

These clamp-plates E are removable by hand or otherwise, and the space between the main body portion E of such clamps and the overhanging edge or lip F thereof--the edge which stands adjacent the body of the frame A-should be so regulated in the extent thereof as to exert a clamping action to clamp or grip therebetween the flanges D of the side and end pieces of the rectangular frame with the netting and its bent or turned-over side or edge, as clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. Of course it will be understood that a separate clamp-plate E is employed for each end of the frame and for each side of the frame.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that we provide an exceedingly simple and efficient screen-frame. The angle-plates forming the side and end portions of the frame being preferably, though not necessarily, of metal, form and constitute an exceedingly strong and durable rectangular frame, while the clamp-plates E, being preferably of spring metal, afford simple and convenient removable means for clamping and gripping and holding the turned-over edges and ends of the netting in place upon the frame thereof. Ve do not desire, however, to be limited or restricted in respect of the material out of which the frame and clamp-plates are to be made. If desired and in order to afford additional strength and rigidity to the frame and to prevent springing of the sides or ends thereof in use or by variations in the temperature or from other cause, said sides and'ends may be braced in any suitable or convenient manner. We have shown a simple arrangement for bracing the sides of the frame wherein the side pieces constituting the frame are formed with projections or extensions G, over which may be slipped the ends of a channel-bar H, said channel-bar extending transversely across the frame, having one end thereof slipped over one projection or extension G on one side part or piece of the frame and the other end thereof slipped over a correspondingly-arranged projection or extension on the other side of the frame, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5, thereby forming an efficient but readily-detachable brace for the screen-frame. While we have described a brace as applied to the side pieces of the frame, it is obvious that the same construction is well adapted for use for bracing the end pieces of the frame. We do not desire, therefore, to be limited or restricted in respect of the mode of application of the brace construction above described.
A screen constructed as above described is adapted for use in any situation or relation where the use of a screen is desirable and may be used as constructed according to the foregoing description, whether as a sliding screen or not. Where it is desired to employ a sliding screen, we propose to provide a suitable guide-channel to receive the edges or flanges of the screen to form a slide or guide way therefor. shown wherein a channel-plate J is designed to be attached at any suitable or convenient point to the opposed faces of the window or door jambs. Ordinarily these channel-plates are attached in sufficiently close relation to the window-for instance, in the case of window-screensto enable either the window-sashes or the screen-frames to slide without interfering or contacting with the other. These channel-plates are preferably of substantially U shape in cross-section, and the open sides thereof are presented toward A simple arrangement is frame or from the fianges thereof, which'extend in a plane parallel to the plane of the body of the gauze, thereby releasing the gauze at its sides and ends. The released gauze or netting may then be readily removed and a new piece placed in position and the sides and ends thereof drawn over the flanges of the side and end pieces of the frame and then the clamp-plates replaced in position to clamp and hold the edges and ends of the gauze.
Having now set forth the object and nature of our invention and a construction embodying the principles thereof, what we claim as new and useful and of our joint invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A screen comprising a frame having side and end pieces, said side and end pieces having fianges lying in substantially the same plane and beyond the body portion thereof, a wire or gauze netting having the ends and sides thereof bent or doubled over said flanges, and channel-plates arranged to be slipped over said flanges to clamp or secure the sides and ends of the netting thereto.
2. A screen comprising a frame having side and end portions suitably secured together, a netting having its sides and ends adapted tobe turned over the side and end portions of the frame, removable clampplates designed to be applied to the side and end pieces of the frame to clamp and hold the overturned sides and ends of the netting thereto, said frame-pieces having projections or extensions, and a channel-bar forming a brace adapted to be slipped over the 'projections or extensions of the frame-pieces to brace the same.
8. A screen comprising a frame having side and end members secured together, each of said members being provided with a projecting portion forming a continuous circumferential flange, a wire or gauze netting having its edges bent over the flange, and clips adapted to be slipped over the flange for securing the netting in position, one edge of said clips being located adjacent the body portion of the frame members and remote from the edge of said members.
4. The combination of a window and a screen, said screen being composed of a plurality of members secured together to form a frame, each of said members being pro- IOO IIO

vided with a projection extending beyond the plane of the body portion forming a circumferential flange adjacent one edge of said body portion, a Wire or gauze netting having its edges turned over the flange, clampplates removably engaging the flange and overturned edges of the netting, and channelplates secured to the Window, thebody of the frame being adapted to stand adjacent the edges thereof with the flanged portion movable therein.
5. A screen comprising a Jframe having side and end members, a ange carried by each of the members, said flanges being disposed on the outside of the frame and eX- tending beyond the plane of the body of its respective member, a Wire gauze or netting having its edges bent over the iange, and removable clamping-plates for clamping the overbent edges of the nettingand anges, zo said clamping-plates being disposed adjacent the periphery of and being protected from displacement by the frame members.
