Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN DoRN,a citi- AZen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Pawl and Ratchet Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide for accurate regulation and variation 1n the extent of movement ofthe shaft to be oper-` ated.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated vmy invention as applied to an autopartly in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line b b, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line c c, Fig. 2. l
In the drawings, 1 represents the cup for containing the lubricant, the latter being preferably of semisolid character, although it may be in liquid form, if desired. Fitting snugly within this cup is a plunger 2, which is swiveled or mounted so as to be free to rotate upon the lower end of a threaded stem 3, the latter being adapted to a threaded opening in the cap or cover 4 of the cup, whereby as said stem is rotated the plunger 2 will be caused to move up or down in the cup, without, however, having any movement of rotation imparted to it.
The screw-stem 3 is flattened on one or both sides and is also reduced in diameter at the top, as shown at 5, at which point it is also provided with a handle 6, whereby it may be rotated by hand when desired. The flattened screw-stem 3 passes through a central opening in a toothed wheel 7, which rests upon the top of the cap 4 and meshes with a worm 9, secured to a shaft 10, the 'latter being adapted to bearings 11, one of which is carried by a ring 12 at the top of the cup and the other by a bracket 13, projecting from said ring.
Upon the shaft 10 are mounted two ratchetwheels 17 and 19, the ratchet-wheel 17 being secured to the shaft and the ratchet-wheel 19 being loose thereon, and between these two wheels are disposed a pair of cam- disks 20 and 21, each provided with a segmental rib 22, whose outer face projects above the tops of the teeth of the ratchet-wheels, the lower portion of the face of each cam-disk being below the bases of said teeth.
The disk 21 has a segmental slot 23, through which passes a bolt 24,A adapted to a threaded opening in the disk 20, said bolt also passing through an opening in the ratchet-wheel 19 and having a head bearing upon the latter, so that when said bolt is tightened both disks 20 and 21 will be securely confined to the ratchet-wheel 19, but when the bolt is loosened the disks may be adjusted circumferentially in respect to one another, so as to cause more or less overlap of 4the ribs 22 of the disks, whereby the aggregate of rib may be increased or diminished as desired-that is to say, when the two ribs are in register with one another they will cover a space of, say, one-half of the circumference of the disk, while 'when they are separated to the extreme limit they will extend throughout almost the entire circumference of the disk.
Mounted so as to swing freely upon the shaft 10 is a forked arm 25, to which is secured a duplex pawl 26, consisting in the present instance simply of a spring-plate split so as to form two members 27 and 28, the narrow member 27 engaging at all times vwith the ratchet-wheel 19, but the wide member 28 overlapping both the ratchetwheel 17 and the cam- disks 20 and 21, so that it will be held out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel 17 as long as it is being acted upon by the raised ribs 22 of the camdisks. For each full rotation of the ratchetwheel 19, therefore, there will be only a partial rotation of the ratchet-wheel 17 and of the worm-shaft 10, to which it is secured, the extent of this rotation being dependent upon the extent of expansion or contraction of the rib 22.
The ring 12 has a lug 30, bearing upon the ratchet-wheel 17, and the bracket 13 has a hollow lug 31, internally threaded for the reception of a screw-plug 32, which acts upon a coiled spring 33, the latter in turn pressing upon a plug 34, of rawhide, vulcanized fiber, or equivalent material, this plug bearing upon the outer side of the ratchet-wheel 19, and thus serving as a friction-brake to prevent back movement of said ratchet-wheel during the downward swinging or retracting movement of the arm 25 and its pawl, the retarding power of this brake being regulated by adjustment of the screw-plug 32, which IOO IIO
increases or diminishes the tension of the spring 33.
In order to prevent any tendency to movement of the ratchet-wheel 17, by reason of its frictional contact with the adjoining camdisk, I interpose between said ratchet-wheel and cam-disk a washer-plate 35, which projects into contact with the bracket 13, and is thereby held in fixed position.
By adjustment of the cam-disks 20 and 2l so as to increase or diminish the length of the segmental rib 22 the extent of movement of the shaft l() and of the parts operated thereby on each vibration of the arm 25 may be accurately governed, and the amount of vlubricant delivered by the cup during a given period of time can thus be regulated with equal accuracy.
I claim- 1. The combination of a shaft, a double wheel, one member of which is loose upon, and the other fixed to, said shaft, and means whereby the rotation of the fixed member of said wheel is prevented during a predetermined portion of the rotation of the other member, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a shaft, a double ratchet-wheel, one member of which is loose upon said shaft and the other secured thereto, a double pawl having one member for each ratchet-wheel, and a cam-flange carried by the loose ratchet-wheel and acting to throw out of operation, for a certain portion of each rotation, the pawl which acts upon the other ratchet-wheel, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a shaft, a double ratchet-wheel, one member of which is loose upon said shaft and the other secured thereto, a double pawl having one member for each ratchet-wheel, and a cam-flange carried by the loose ratchet-wheel and acting to throw out of operation for a certain portion of each rotation, the pawl which acts upon the other ratchet-wheel, said cam-flange being composed of two members adjustable one in respect to the other so as to vary the peripheralextent of the hi h portion of the cam, substantially as specied.
4. The combination of a shaft, a double ratchet-wheel, one member of which is loose upon, and the other secured to, the shaft, a double pawl having one member for each ratchet-wheel, a cam-,flange acting to throw out of operation for a certain portion of each rotation, the pawl which acts upon the ratchet-wheel which is fast to the shaft, and an adjustable friction-brake for preventing back movement of the loose ratchet-wheel, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a shaft, a double ratchet-wheel, one member of which is loose upon, and the other secured to, the shaft, a double pawl having one member for each ratchet-wheel, a cam-fiange acting to throw out of operation, fora certain portion of each rotation, the pawl which acts upon the ratchet-wheel which is fixed to the shaft, and a fixed washer interposed between said ratchet-wheel and the cam-flange, substantially as specified.
