Description

Q wn f @timed 5ta ter Q anni (nifl H. BUCHTIIR, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
' Letters Patent No. 83,250, dated .October 20, 1868.
IMPRovED 'cam-SEAT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
*MoH- To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. BUCHTER, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useiill Improvement in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description` thereof, which will enable others skilled in the' art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,l forming partl of this specification, in Whichthe figure is a cross-section of my improved chair-seat.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish animprovement in the mode of securing the ends oftheV Acanes in'forminggthe seats of cane-seated chairs, by
means of which the canes may be placed close together, so as to form a close seat, while at the same time the seats will last much longer, and may be 'much more quickly formed than when made in the ordinary manner; and it consists in the mode of securing the ends of the cane to the seat-frame, as hereinafter more fully-described.
A is th'e frame of the chair-seat, and Bare the canes that form the seat.
The canes B may be closely interwoven or interlaced with each other, so as to forma closeseat, or they may be loosely interwoven or interlaced, so as to forman open seat in the ordinary style.
The formeroonstruction I prefer, as forming a firmer and better seat, and one that will last much longer than cane-seats constructedin the ordinary manner.
Ihe ends of the canes. B are inserted in grooves, formed in the upper surface of the frames A of the chair-seat, where they are secured in, place by glue. They are still further secured. in place by strips, C, attached to the frame A in such a Way as to overlap the bend of the canes and the grooves in which the ends of the canes are'inserted, as shown in the figure.
The position of the grooves which receiye the ends of the canes B, must depend upon the style of chair to which the improvement is to be applied, and the position of said grooves may be varied, as may be desired, or as may be required by the style of chair, Without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire toi secure by Letters Patent- L Thecombination of the bent canes B, grooved seat A, and strip C, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
The' above specification of my invention signed by me, this 1st day of July, 1868.
