AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1906.
Application filed May 11,1906. Serial No. 316,385.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JEREMIAH CLARK MEssER and JEFFERSON CooK, citizens of the United States, residing at Buda, in the county of Hays and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Agricultural Im lement, of which the following is a speci cation.
This invention has reference to means for detachably holding a blade on an agricultural implement. Among its objects are the provision of novel means whereby the blade may be firmly held and yet readily detached without the use of a wrench or tool of any sort and to provide a construction whereby continued use instead of loosening the blade will serve to tighten it on the shank or handle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel parts and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the specification and the accom anying drawings, forming a part thereof, tl e same reference characters are applied to the same parts throughout.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of an implement of the hoe type, the section being taken in the plane of the handle. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a pers ective view showing the blade and handle etached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the handle-attaching means in connection with a tool of a different type.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 designates the gooseneck of a hoe, formed in accordance with this invention. The said gooseneck is provided with a flat portion 2, the rear face of which is designed to contact with the upper front part of the hoe-blade. Projecting rearwardly from the lower part of the said flat portion 2 of the shank is a stud 3, which has a head 4 and a neck 5. The neck 5 is of the same dimension vertically as the head 4, but is narrower horizontally. Where the flat portion 2 joins the shank of the gooseneck, there is a shoulder 6, having a slot 7 therein. The blade of the hoe is provided with an opening 8, throughwhich the head 4 of the stud 3 may readily be passed. Below the openin 8 is a wedge-shaped slot 9, of substantial y the same width as the neck 5 of the stud. The upper part of the hoe-blade is notched at 10, the notch 10 being of substantially the same width as the shoulder 6.
To secure the hoe-blade on the gooseneck, it is only necessary to introduce the stud 3 into the opening 8, the notch 10 at the same time receiving the shoulder 6. The edge of the hoe is struck sharply u on the ground or is struck by a piece of woo when the neck 5 of the stud 3 will pass into the wedge-shaped slot 9 in the hoe-blade and the upper part of the blade immediately beneath the notch 10 therein will enter the slot 7 and the shoulder 6.
Since the slots 7 and 9 are each slightly smaller near the bottom, the farther the hoeblade is driven upon the gooseneck the tighter it will be held, the neck 5 being wedged into the notch 9 and the top of the hoe-blade adjacent the notch therein being wedged in the slot 7 in the gooseneck.
It will be observed that we provide means for fastening the blade to the gooseneck at two distinct points on the blade, one of these points being near the center of the hoe-blade and one at the upper central portion thereof. Further, the shoulder 6 provides means for holding the hoe-blade in alinement upon the gposeneck while it is being secured firmly in p ace.
In Fig. 4 we have shown a plow-shovel 11, which is detachably secured upon a cultivator-foot 12 in the same manner as the hoeblade uponthe gooseneck of the hoe.
My improved fastenin means dispenses with bolts and rivets and like fastenings and provides means whereby a hoe or other blade can be removed from its shank by a blow of a stone or piece of wood and another blade substituted therefor as easily. A blade fastened in this manner is secured as firmly as if welded or riveted to the shank.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a blade provided with a wedge-shaped slot and a notch therein, and a shank formed to enter said notch and provided with a stud to enter the said Wedgeshaped slot.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a blade rovided with a wedge-shaped slot, a shanl i having a transversely-disposed Wedge-sha ed slot adapted to receive the edge of t e blade, and a stud to enter the slot of the blade.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a blade having a notched edge and a wedgeshaped slot, a shank hav ing a transversely-disposed Wedge-shaped slot adapted to enter the notch of the blade and receive the edge thereof, and a stud to enter the Wedge-shaped slot of the blade.
4. In a device of the class described, a blade having its upper edge provided With a notch, a shank entering said notch, and means for securing the end of the shank to an intermediate part of the blade.
5. In combination, a blade having a notch at its top central portion and having a Wedgeshaped slot near its center, a shank having a fiat portion to rest upon the face of the blade and having a stud projecting therefrom and formed with a shoulder at the top of said flat portion and With a notch in said shoulder, the upper part of the blade at the base of the upper notch therein being adapted to be secured in the notch in the shoulder of the shank, and a stud being adapted to be re ceived in the notch near the center of the blade.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own We have hereto a'ffixed our signa- 3o tures in the presence of two Witnesses.
