P. L. PETERSON- BACK STOP FOR PIGKHR STICKS.
APPLIOATION run no.4, ma.

UNITED sfrA rns rA rENT OFFICE.
PA'iRIK L. PETERSON, OF NORTH GROSVENOR DALE, CONNECTICUT,
ASSIGNOR TO DRAPER COMPANY, OF HOPEDALE,
MASSACHU- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25. 1906.
Application filad December 4. 1905. Serial No. 290,067.
To a]! whom (1L may concern:
Be it known that l, PATRIK L. PETERSON, tizen of the United States, and a resident of North Grosvenor Dale, county of Windham, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Back-Stops for Pie-ker- Sticks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like numerals on the draw lugs representing iike parts.
This invention has for its object the prod uetion of a novel hack-stop or positionim device to eoi'iperat-e with a loom picker-stir on its outward stroke and stop the same at the desired point.
The back-stop is adjusiably mounted on the la to take up wear when necessary and also to regulate the stoppinp and starting, point of the picker-st iek.
The various novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoined specification and particularly point-ed out in the following: claims.
Figurel is a h'ontelevation, )a'rtly broken out,of one end of a loom-lay and the adjacent picker-stick with one embodiment of my invention in operative. position. Fig. :2 is a rear elevation of the lay, showing the means by which the back-sto is ad just-ably secured in position; and Fig. 3 1s a perspective view ol the back-stop detached.
The lay longitudinally slotted at .2 in usual manner for the swinging picker-stink 3, the binder 4, cover-plate 5, and front boxplate 6, Figs. 1 and 2, may he and are all of usual or well-known construction, the part 7 of the lay forming the outer end of the slot 2, being cut away, as at 7*, Fig. l
Various devices have been provided to stop the picker-stick at. the outer end of the lay, such devices being more or less ellieieut and emivenient and depending, on springs, springeontrolled stops or pneumaticv devices lo] their operation.
In my present invention l have provided a hack-stop which has great simplicity and strength ol construct-ion and which is secured in an adjustable manner on lhe la so llnu the stopping-point. ol' the piclu-r-sliek can be regulated as desired and wen r taken up, the use of springs ors wing-eonlrollerldevieesai-nl pneumatic stops or cushions being wholly obviated.
Referring to Fig. 3, a flat elongated stand 8 is dropped at its outer end at. 9 and continued as a lateral arm ll) at right angles to thestand, the outer end. of the arm being onlar 'ed to form a heavy and rigid hack-stop l1 having a convex face 12, recessed at top and bottom at 13. A piece of leather, rubher, raw-hide, or other suitable material, as 14, is s u'ung into the recesses over the face 1:2 oi the back-stop to provide the impact face or surface against which the picker-stick strikes atthe. desired point. of stoppage on its outward stroke. 1 form a guideway on the rear side of the lay by means of two parallel longitudinal ribs 15 (see Fig. 2) adjacent the end of the lay, the guidewa being wide enough to permitthe. stand 8 to he slidably seated therein, the arm 10 extending across the lay below the end portion 7 of no slot 2, the drop 9 permit-ting the arm to do so. The arm 10 is ol" such length that. the hack-stop is laterally oll'setfrom the stand in the path of the picker-stiek on its outward stroke, as will he manifest, the convex portion of the hack-- stop or,ra-ther, the impact. member 14 taking, the blow of the picker-st.iek. A slot 16 in the stand receives a bolt 17, Fig. :2, extended through the rear portion ol" the lay, a nut- 18 on the bolt elamping the stand firmly in position on the law. By loosening the nut. the hack-stop can beudjusted inward or out-ward as necessary, the guideway sustaining the stand and preventing any displacement thereof or olthe back-stop. and alter the nut 18 is setup the device is rigidly secured in the desired )osition on the lay. The stand, arm, and lniek-stop are conveniently made as an integral piece by ens-tin; or forging, and when the impact member l4 becomes too much worn itean be removed and a new one readily inserted, the position of the recesses l3 holding it. in place wil hout other fastening.
The device is cheap, strong, and durable,
it is adjusled and elamped in place by a. sin-' gle clamping member, and forms an ell'eetive stop for l he pirker-sl Eek.
Having fully described my invention. what I elaim as new, and desire to secure by Let.- ters I'll-tent, is-
1. A lay longitudinally slot-led l'o'r the l and to stop the outward stroke of the piekerpicker-stick, mrallel longitudinal guide-ribs on the rear Si! 0 of the la near its outer end, a hack-stop having eon vex, face in the path of and to stop the picker-stick on its outward stroke, a non metallic inning dotar-hahiv secured to the hack-stop and lying against. the eonvex face thereof, a stand rigidly eonnecterl with and laterally offset from the hack-stop and slidahl mounted between the guide-ribs, and adjustable means to clamp the stand to the la}- and thereby position the hack-stop.
.2. A lay lmwitudinally slotted for the picker-stick and having a longitudinal guideway near the out-er end, a slotted stand slidnbly seated in the guidewzav, a clamping-lwlt o secure it in adjusted position, a r1gi(.ll \-'-attached metallic hack-stop laterally oll'set. from said stand and positioned in the path of stick, and a renewable leather facing to co er the fareof the back-stop.
3. 'A lav longitudinally slotted for the picker-stick, a metallic hack-stop in the path of the picker-stick on its outward stroke, said hack-stop having a convex face and transverse, pa rallel retaining-recesses at the upper and lower ends thereof, a leather ini act member removahly held in place by suit recesses, covering and resting against the convex face. of the back-stop, and means to edjustal'ily attach the hack-stop to the lay.
In testimony wl'lereoi' I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PATRIK L. PETERSON.
Witnesses Corrections in Letiers Patent No. 832,025.
