SHUTTLE-CHECKING MECHANISM FOR LOOMS.

This invention relates to shuttle checking mechanism for looms.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient mechanism acting positively to check the shuttle at the end of its flight or the conclusion of its boxing move ment so that it will be properly positioned in the shuttle box.
The object of the invention is further to provide such a mechanism in which the checking pressure shall be released immediately the picker moves to pick the shuttle out of the box so that the picking of the shuttle may be readily effected.
The object of the invention is further to provide a shuttle checking mechanism comprising a binder having on its shuttle op posing face a metal leaf spring swell, faced with a suitable non-metallic substance such as leather, and which swell is secured at one end to the binder and at its other end is forced .away from the binder to effect the shuttle checking movement.
The object of the invention is further to provide, in connection with a binder and spring swell of the character last mentioned, a strap surrounding the picker and acting when the picker moves the shuttle to release the shuttle from the pressure of the swell.
These and other objects and features of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
As the invention relates solely to a shuttle mechanism and as the general construction and operation of the other features of the loom are well known and familiar to those skilled in the art, it is only necessary here to illustrate and describe that portion of an ordinary type of loom together with a preferred form of construction embodying the invention.

Fig. 1 is a top plan view partially broken away of the lay and associated parts at one side of a loom.
Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in transverse cross section taken on the line 33 Fig. 1.
A construction embodying the present invention may be embodied in various types of looms and will preferably be the same at each side of the loom.
In the form of loom illustrated, the lay swords one of which is shown at 1 supports the lay 2. On the top of the lay at the end is the shuttle box comprising a front wall or binder 3 rigidly bolted to the lav at l. the rear binder 5, and the top plate 6. The picker stick 7 passes up through a slot in the lay and carries at its upper end the picker 8.
The present invention is concerned with one of the binders forming the shuttle box, and in the illustrated case with the rear binder 5 or that binder which is movable.
The rear binder 5 is shown in general of usual shape, preferably constructed of wood and is pivoted at its outerend by a stud 9 to the lay so that it may swing toward and from the shuttle. This binder, as usual, is pressed toward the shuttle by metal spring 10 secured at 11 to the side of the lay and resting at its inner end against the rear face of the inner end of the binder. The usual binderfinger 12 also engages the binder at the rear face of its inner end and is pressed toward the shuttle by the usual protector rod spring 13.
In the preferred form of this invention, a metal leaf spring 14 constituting a swell is secured at its inner end as by the screws 15 to the inner end of the binder 5 on the shuttle opposing face of the binder. This spring is provided with a suitable non-metallic facing 16, preferably a strip of leather cemented or otherwise permanently secured thereto and which will not damage or injure the shuttle.
A plunger 17 is mounted in and extends transversely of the binder opposite the free end of the swell. This plunger is preferably provided at its inner end with an enlarged head 18 seated in a recess in the binder and abutting the swell and also at its outer end with another enlarged head 19.
.A strap 20, preferably of leather, is secured at one end by a bolt 21 to the front binder, thence passes around the picker 8 in the plane of the binders thence around and over the head 19 of the plunger and is then secured at its other end by a bolt 22 to the binder 5.
Itwill now be seen that as the shuttle enters the box it first passes the inner end of the binder 5 which is pressed against the shuttle by the spring 10, and to some extent by the spring 13 of the binder finger 12 and then, as the shuttle concludes its boxing movement, and presses the picker 8 against the strap 20 the plunger 17 forces the metal leaf spring swell at the outer end against the shuttle. Thus the shuttle is promptly and accurately brought to rest and firmly clamped and held in the shuttle box.
It will also be seen that immediately the picker 7 begins its picking movement or moves toward the center of the loom, the strap 20 is loosened, the plunger 1'7 free from the pressure of the strap and conse quently the pressure of the spring swell on the shuttle is released, leaving the shuttle held in the box only by such pressure as is exerted by the springs 10 and 13. This enables the shuttle readily to be picked from the box by the picker.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a loom shuttle checking mechanism comprising a shuttle binder pivoted at one end on the lay, a metal leaf spring swell secured at one end to the shuttle opposing face of the binder, a non-metallic facing on the swell, and means actuated by the shuttle as it is boxed for forcing the free end of the swell toward the shuttle.
'2. In a loom, shuttle checking mechanism comprising a shuttle binder pivoted. at one end on the lay, a metal leaf spring swell secured at one end to the shuttle opposing face of the binder, a non-metallic facing on the swell, a plunger mounted in and transversely of the binder and abutting the swell near its free end and means actuated by the shuttle as it is boxed to cause said plunger to act to move the swell away from the binder to clamp the shuttle in its box.
3. In a loom, shuttle checking mechanism comprising a shuttle binder pivotally mounted at its outer end, a metal leaf spring swell secured at its inner end to the inner end of the binder and means acting respectively to cause the inner end of the binder to be pressed against the shuttle as it enters the box and to cause the outer end of the swell to be pressed against the shuttle it concludes its boxing movement.

In a loom, shuttle checking mechanism comprising a shuttle binder pivotally mounted at its outer end, a metal leaf spring swell secured at its inner end to the inner end of the binder, a plunger mounted in and transversely of the binder and abutting the swell near its free end, means acting normally to press the inner end of the binder toward the shuttle, a shuttle picker and a strap surrounding the picker and overlying the plunger with its ends secured respectively to the binder and to the opposite wall of the shuttle box, whereby at the conclusion of the boxing of the shuttle, the shuttle striking the picker causes the free end of the swell to be pressed against the shuttle and whereby immediately the picker begins its picking movement, the pressure thus iinposed on the shuttle is released.
