To all whom it may concern/f y Be it known'that We, WILLIAM F. HEL- MOND and FRANK A. COOK, citizens of thel United States, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Imi provements in Type-Writin Machines, of which the following is a spec'y cation.

, When the ribbon is paid off from 'either s o'ol,
the obstruction upon that end of the ri bon engages the associated arm and .vibrates the same, therebyr putting a -yspring under tension, which spring is caused to press against a driving-shaft, therebyT tending to shift the shaft into connection with the empty spool. A stop Or a latch prevents the shifting of t ev shaft however,until the springgains sufficien tension, whereupon the continued movement of the ribbon-arm serves to release -said sto orlatch, and thereupon the driving-shaft 1s shifted by means of the tensioned spring, and a companion stop drops into place to prevent reverse shiftin of the shaft.
The invention also includesV improved means:y for enabling a reciprocating part of the machine to impart rotary movement to the driving-shaft.

Mounted loosely upon each of the spoolshafts 7 and 8, near its upper end, is a detentarm 38, having a hub 39, in which is formed a recess 40, in which is placed a compressionspring 41 and ball 42. The springA presses the ball against the shaft, thereby producing constant friction between the latter and the detent-arm or hub'. By this means the arm is given a constant tendencyT to rotate in the same. direction as the shaft. During the unwinding of the spool the detent-arm presses 4against the ribbon-arm 19; but when the latter is thrown b'ackwardly by the ribbon as seen in dotted lines, it clears said detent-arm, and the latter thereupon rotates with the shaft 7 to the dotted-line position at Fig. 5,
this movement being arrested by a'fixed stop 43, the detent having a forked end 44, within which said stop is placed. When the detent is in the operative position seen at Fig. 5, it locks the ribbon-arm 19, thereby preventing premature return of the latter to normal position, which might occur, partly because of 'the reaction of its spring 27 and partly because of the pull of its returning-spring 34. Thus the detent locks the arm 19 in operative position and assures the full benefit of the energy which has been stored up in the spring 27, which does the shifting of the driving-shaft 13. lWhen the -shaft 7 begins t-o wind, the detent 38, turning therewith, returns t-o normal position, thereby releasing Athe ribbon-arm 19. The latter is returned to l ar 47 or an intervening washer 52.

The bushing 50 is fixed ina bracket 55, forming apart of the framework or casting of the machine and also having a bushing 56, in which one end of the shaft 13 is journaled. Secured to f said bracket 55 is a fixed plate 57, having an eye l58, through which the collar 47 passes, and
also having'a ball 59 working in an inclined slot 6() and serving as a back-check for the pinion-barrel. The driving-shaft 13 may, however, be otherwise ,rotated within the scope of our improvements.
Having thus described our invention, we
4 claim- 1. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a pair of ribbon-spools and an endwise-shiftable shaft for winding the spools, of a pair of stops, springs for setting said stops, means upon the driving-shaft for cooperating with the stops in alternation to prevent endwise movement of the shaft,l arms mounted in the path of the ribbon to be moved thereby, springs associated with said arms, means upon the drivingshaft to ,coperate 'with the last-mentioned springs in alternation for shifting the shaft endwise, and means controlled by said arms for releasing said stops when said shifting-springs have been put under tension.
2. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a pair of ribbon-spools and an endwise-shiftable shaft for winding the spools, of collars upon the driving-shaft, movable spring-pressed stops mounted upon the framework in position to ride idly upon said collars, the latter so placed that by a. movement in one direction one of said stops will engage its collar in a manner to lock the shaft, and when the shaft is moved in the.

In a type-Writing machinefthe combi-l nation with a pair of ribbon-spool shafts and a driving-shaft, of yielding means controlled by the ribbon foreiiecting disengagement between said driving-shaft and one of said spool-shafts and engagement between said driving-shaft and the other of said spool-v shafts; and a detent mechanism l having means for preventing return of said yielding means to normal position after disengagement from one spool-shaft and before 'engagement with the other spool-shaft.. p

A"In a type-writing machine, the combination with a pair of ribbon-spools and an endwise-shiftable `shait for winding the spools, of a pair of stops, springs for setting said stops, means upon the'driving-shaft for cooperating with the stops in alternation to prevent endwise movement of the shaft,
' arms mounted in the path ofthe ribbon to be moved thereby, springs associated with said arms, means upon the driving-shaft to coperate with the last-mentioned springs in alternation for shifting the shaft endwise, means upon said arms for releasing said stops when said shifting-springs have been put under tension, a pair of detents, and means for moving said detents-into the path of said arms to prevent premature return of the latter to lnormal positions, and for releasing said arms from the'control of the de'tents-when the rib-` bon begins to rewind upon the empty spool.

restored to normal postition by the reverse movement of thespool-shaft when the ribbon begins to wind upon its spool, and means for vlimiting reciprocation of said detents.
9. In a ribbon-spool-winding mechanism, the combination with a drivin -shaft shiftable endwise, of a gear upon said shaft, a pinion in mesh with said gear during the shiftin movements oi the latter, alshaft or barre whereon said pinion is fixed, a reciprocatin lever loosely mounted upon said barrel an 'having an inclined slot and a ball therein for' clutching said barrel, and a iixed support for said barrel, said support having an inclined slot and ball for preventing backward slip of said barrel.
