Description

ALEXANDER IRWIN, OE MADISON, INDIANA.
" Letters Patent No. 83,167, dated 06mm 20, 1868.
IMPROVED MODE-UP PUTTING UP STARCH FOR USE.
The Schedule referred toin these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER IRWIN, of Madison, in the county of J etferson, and State of Indiana,
have invented new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Starch; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the process which will enable those. skilled in the art to use the same.
My invention has for its object putting the starchpulp into convenient packages, in the form of cubes of uniform size and equal weight, and allowing it to crystallize in that state, by the means and in the mamier as hereinafter explained.
The means used to accomplish the above object are, a wheel of suitable'diameter, having in its face a number of square receptacles or pockets, of the proper size and dimensions to form the cube of starch of the required weight. This wheel revolves'with an intermittent motion, by steam or other power, and the starch is fed into the pockets at the top. After the pocket is filled and passes the hopper, the wheel, by its intermittent motion, stops until. a piston or plunger, accurately fitted to the pocket, and operated by the same power, through suitable mechanism, enters the pocket and presses the starch into the required shape and size, the requisite amount of pressure having been exerted on the starch to permit of its crystallization in the proper form, the pressure being regulated and adjusted by suitable mechanism. After this is accomplished, the wheel continues .to revolve, and the package of starch, ah-eady pressed, is removed from the pocket by a piston or plunger operating in a contrary direction, and the operation is repeated by the continuous rotation of the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim the .mechanical arrangement by which the object is accomplished; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Formin'g'the wet starch into cubical packages of uniform size and equal weight, as a new process of manufactme.
A. IRWIN.
