iLLUiiiiNlTED SiGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1906.
Application led April 3, 1908. Serial No. 309,61Ll.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that i, OSCAR HERRMANN, a
Icitizen oi the United States, residing at Brown Station, in the county oi Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Illuminated Sign, of which the iollowing is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in signs. i
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of signs and to provide an illuminated one designed particular@ for the use ofphysioians and ada ted to be readily mounted on the interior o a Window for displaying the naine of a doctor or other matter.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sign oi this character adaoted to be secured to the lower sash of a window and to be carried by the same in its vertical movement and oe able' also of affording readyv1 aecess to the lig ting devise and oi preventing the name from injuring the curtain or draperies of a Window.
With these andv other objeets in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrene'enient ora parte hereinafter fuliy described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being under* stood that various changes in the forni, proportion, size, and minor details oi construe# tion Within the scope of the ciain'is maybe resorted to Without departing iroin the spirit or sacriieing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an illuminated sign constructed in aeeordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view oi the sign7 showing the same applied to the lower sash oi' a window. F ig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 oi F ig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view7 the sign being broken away at the center. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view oi the oilreservoir.
Like numerals of reference designate corH responding parts Y in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates an oblong casing constructed of suitable sheet metal and composed of a 'front Wall 2, end Walls 3, a top wall 4, and a bot-torn 5. The front wall is provided with a longitudinal aperture 6 for exposing a transparent sign plate or piece 7, which is designed '3 of the drawins.
to bear the naine of a physician or other matter to be displayed.
The transparent sigmplate is preferably constructed of glass, and it is secured to the inner face of the front wall 2 of the easing by means oi lugs 8, loated at eeeh endl of the transparent sign-plate and consisting of small lates or pieces of sheet metal or other suitab e material secured to the inner face of the front Wall oi 'the easing and having rojeoting portions for engaging the sign-p ate. The projecting portions' ere adapted to Ibe leadil bent out of engagement with the plate should it be desired to remove the saine for an?,Y purpose.
The sign is illuminated by means of a lighting device consisting oi an oil-reservoir 9, arranged upon the bottom of the easing and extending the entire length of the saine and provided at intervals with wick or burner tubes 10, adapted to, receive Wicks 3.1. The oil-reservoiris provid ed at one end with a suitable lling-opening having a proj eeting flange- 12, which receives a threaded closure 13.
The oii-reservoir is removable from the easing, which is provided with a slidebie rear weil or back le. The back 1 4 is arraneed in suitable ways, consisting or' upper and oWer flanges 15 and 1d, formed by bending the 'rear edges of the top and bottom an 5 at right angles, as shown. The-end walls are spaced from the end edges of the iront wallA and the top and bottoni of the casing andere provided et their reni" vertical edves with outtnrned iianges 17, one of which is engaged by a proieeting iange or ortion i8 of the removable back, as olearly s The top of tlie easing is provided with a loneitudinal slot 19 for the escape of heet ano. other products of combustion, and in order to prevent the flames of the lighting device from ilaring through the slot and injuring the curtains and dra eries by smoke or heat the sign is provide with a combined guard and reeetor 21'), having aninolined portion extending upwardly and forwardly ironi the back of the casing, as clearly illustra-ted 2 oi the drawings, and termi uating short of the iront Wall of the same, but at a point in advance of the slot 19,
iown in i zoo whereby it is interposed between the lights Y and the said slot 19.' The hot air is permit` ted to escape around the combined guard and reflector, which is provided with iront and rear ilanges 21 und 22, extendingupwardly IIC geous as a do'ctors sign.
`substantially tI-shaped in cross-section, as
' with Letters Patent, is-
from the iront and rear edges of the inclined l reflecting portion and ada ted to'stili'en the combined guard and re ector, The rear wall extends npwardlv to ap roximately the plane ofthe upper edge of t e inclined portion, the combined guard and reector being shown.
The ,Sign is secured to the lower sash 23 of a window by Ineens of a bottom lug 24 and end lugs 25. These lugs, which are providedy erforations to receive screws or othersuite, le fastening devices, fit against the sigln may be Inounted on a window in any ot er desired manner, and it may beadvantageously employed for a variety of purposes, but will be found to be especially advanta- The substantiallyM-shaped combined relector and uard forms an upper groove or gutter, whic i islocated directly beneath the slot 19 and whichis adapted to 'catch any thing falling into the casing and )re'vent the saine from coming in contact Witli the lighting device. l
Having, thus fully described my invention, i what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 1. An illuminated sign comprising a casing provided with an aperture, a sign plate or piece arranged at the aperture, a lighting device located within the casing in rear of thc sign plate or piece, and a combined guard and reiector having an inclined portion located above the lighting device.
2. An illuminated sign comprising a casing l provided at the top with an opening for the escape of heat7 and having a transparent" sign plate or piece at its front, a lighting device arranged within the casing in rear of'the sign plate or piece, and a combined guard and reflector interposed between the lighting device and the esame-opening and having an inclined portion for throwing the light upon the transparent sign plate'or piece.
3. An illuminated sign comprising a casing provided in its top n ith a longitudinal slot, a lighting device, and a combined guard and reflector interposed between the lighting der' vice and the top ol the casing, and having an inclined portion extending upwardlyr and forwardly from the back ol the casing and terminating at its fronl edge in advance of the said slot` the front odge oi' the combined guard and reflector bring spaced from the front wall oi the casing to provide a passage for the heated nir.
4. An illuminnlcd sign comprising a casing provided at the top with an outlet for the escape oiE healed air, n lighting device located within the casing', :md a combined guard and reflector interposed between the outlet and the lighting device n'nd forming an upper groove or gint-er. 65
In testimony that l chiim thel'oregoing as\ my own l have hereto :rllixed m signature in the presence ol' two witnesses.
OSCAR HERRMANN.
