Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Sept. 25, 1906.
Application filed October 19,1905. Serial No. 283,368.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP 0. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to produce a strong, durable, e'llicient, and inexpensive hame-fastener whereby the lower ends of hames may be easily and quickly drawn toward each other (to the required extent) and there securely fastened and also easily and quickly unfastened.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a structure embodying my said invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of hames provided with my improved fastening;

The hames 21 22 are of any usual or desired form or construction, and each of said hames is provided on its lower end with a suitable ring or clip 23. Hooked into these rings or clips are the two fastener members 31 and 41. The body of the member 31 is in the form of a rack-bar, being provided with teeth 32 along its lower side, and it passes between the forks 42 and 43 of the member 41, which is bifurcated to receive it. Between the lower ends of this bifurcated member I mount a cam-lever 51 on a pivot 52. This cam-lever is provided with teeth 53, similar to those on the part 31, and are adapted to en gage therewith. In operation the hames are brought together as far as is convenient by hand and the lever 51 is swung around from the position indicated in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 2. This pulls the part 41 along on the part 31 a short distance, the distance being illustrated by the difference in relative positions in the two figures, and at the same time swings up, so that the handle is substantially parallel with the part 31, as shown in Fig. 2. I then slip the locking-pin 54 along from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2, which looks the devices securely in this position. The handle of the cam-lever 51 contains a groove 55 to receive this looking-pin, said groove having a transverse notch 56 leading thereinto, and the lockingpin has its rear end 5? turned at right angles with its body, so as to be capable of being turned down into this notch when said pin is shoved forward, as shown in Fig. 2, said notch thus forming a detent for said pin.
In unfastening the hames the end 57 of the locking-pin is swung up out of the notch, and said looking-pin is then slid back in its groove to the position shown in Fig. 3, when the camlever may be swung down, throwing its teeth out of engagement with those on the part 31, after which the parts may be readily separated.
IIaving thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a hame-fastening, of a ratchet-bar member, a second member embracing said ratchet bar member, a toothed cam-lever pivotally mounted in said second member, and a sliding locking-pin telescoped in said lever and projectable longitudinally to increase the length of the lever upon one side of its pivot, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a hame-fastening, of two members slidably connected together, a cam-lever mounted upon one and engaging with the other and provided with a groove and a notch, and a locking-pin mounted in said groove and having a transverse portion adapted to engage with said notch when said locking-pin is in its extended position.
3. The combination, in a hame-fastening, of two members slidably connected together, a cam-lever mounted upon one and engaging with the other whereby the final operation is performed, said cam-lever being provided with a groove and a transverse notch, and a locking-pin mounted in said groove on said cam-lever and having an end adapted to be moved into and out of said notch, said notch being thus adapted to form a detent for said pm.
