@fc/1 @it T. C. HENDRY, OF 'UNION POINT, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND R. B. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters 'Patent No. 83,156, (lated Octoberl 20, 1868.A
IMPROVEMENT IN AUG-1E:lR-HAN'DLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Platent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T, C. HENDRY, of Union Point, in the countyof Greene, and State of Georgia, have vinvented an Improved Auger-Handle; and I do hereby declare that vthe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part of this speciication Figure l being aside view of an auger, and Iof my improved handle applied thereto.'
Figure 2, a bottom view of the handle-socket.
Figure 3, a top view of the same.
Figure 4, a side view of the upper end or shank of the auger-shaft.
Figure 5, a bottom view of the head on the upper end of the auger-shank. f
Like letters desiguatecorresponding parts in all of the iigures.
The auger C is connected with the handle proper, B, by means of a socket, A, which is of peculiar construction, and in which the main feature of my invention consists. This socket has a vertical tube, a, throughl which the shank, c, of the Aauger-shaft passes, and in theI round aperture g of which the said round shank c ofthe shai't freely turns. The socket also has a horizontal tube, b,- at right angles to the tube a, through which horizontal tube the handle B extends, and is held therein by the shank c of the nger passing through ahole,l 'a or p, transversely through it.
On the lower end of the tube a of the socket is a set of ratchet-teeth, d d, which engage with correspending teeth or projections f j', on the auger-shaft,
just below the rounded shank c thereof. These ratchet-teeth areso formed as to couple the socket to the auger when turning the handle in the right direction for boring, but to slip over the projections f j' when turning the handle in the other direction, the
said projections corresponding in form with the ratchet-teeth, all substantially as represented.
auger. y'These notches and projections, which may be interchanged on the head and socket, are preferably abrupt on both auger and-socket another way, though they may be abrupt only on one side, a's'with the ratchet-teeth d, so that they will only couple the parts together when the handle is turned backward. The use of this coupling is to turn the auger for withdrawing it from the wood. There is a `hole,`p, through the centre of the handle B, to keep the same centrally in the socket for ordinary use. But there is also a hole, 1J, near one end of the handle, for use in cases When the situation-of the place for boring. is such that .both ends of the handle cannot be used.
This construction of handle gives the auger remarkable capabilities:
First, the auger auger, turning the handle round lution at a stroke; or
Second, the augercan be turned as with a ratchet, the handle being continually held in the hands without shifting, but being vibrated, so as to repeatedly renew the hold on the auger.; or
Third, the two movements above may alternate, thereby resting the operator; or
Foiuth, by drawing the handle B out to one side, so that the auger-shank passes through the hole p, the auger can be used in narrow and nearly inaccessible places, wherever a chisel can be used.
This invention is thereforeA particularly useful with bridge-builders, ship and house-carpenters, and milland round, half a revowrights.
The application of this improved handle is not to be coniined to angers alone, but it may be applied to gimlets, bit-braces, screw-(hivers, drills, wrenches, dac.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure There is suiicient space between the upper end of the socket-tube a and the head of the auger-shanlgito made adjustable in the socket b, and the auger-shank allow the necessary up-and-down movement of the shank in the socket for coupling and uncoupling the' socket and auger, as above specified.
The head, D, is secured to the auger-shank c by a square eye, fi, iig. 5, iitting overa portion of the shank, of corresponding form and size, and by screwing a nut, h, on the shank above the head, as shown, or by any other means. v
1n the upper end of the socket-tube a is asetof radiabnotehes, l Z, into which projections m m on the under side of the head iit when the head and socket are brought together, by lifting' on the handle of the by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the socket A, formed by two tubes a and b, crossing each other, with the handle B c, having a ratchet thereon, extending up through the tube a and handle B, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
In witness that the above is a true specification of my improved auger-handle, I hereunto set my hand, this 2d day of December, 1867.
