Description

' IMPROVEMENT IN BILLIARD-TABLES.
To all whom 'it Anza/y concern Be it known that I, KARL GUDENOGE, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Billiard-Table; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suflicient to enable any person skilled in .the art o1' science to which it most nearly appertains to makeand use my said invention or improvement- Without further invention or experiment.
' The nature of my invention is to provide an improved billiard-table, so constructed that the use of the most costly portion, as now made, willbe avoided, whilethetable ofmy coirstructiUn-Wiilbesimpiecireapf and not liable to get out of order.
To accomplish this object, I construct the bed of my table of a-series of thin longitudinal wooden slats, across which I place another series of transverse slats; also two`other series, one longitudinal and the other transverse, are placed below the others. The whole is firmly united together by some strongly-adhesive substance, and forms a solid frame-work that will not Warp, and will always retain its horizontal siu'face. The' surface or top of the table is formed by placing, instead of the marble slabs and slates nowin use for that purpose, a layer or layers of `pasteboard or palcr-mach, '.aid upon the horizontal frame-Work, and secured with glue or other adhesive substance, after which the top is polished to the desired evenness of surface, and protected with a coat of paint.
To more fully describe my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon, of Which- Figure l is a side sectional elevation.
Figure 2 is a bottoni view.
The frame-Work Which supports the bed of the table is composed of slats of Wood, a (t a., '&c., laid length- Wise of the table. These slats are made of the desired Width, and placed parallel to' each other, leaving a space of about one-fomth of an inch between them. Transverse slats, b b b, 811e., are laid across these longitudinal slats, and secured to them, and are placed at a further distance apart. A second series -of longitudinal slats or rails, c c c, &c., largerin size, are placed across the series b, -having the under sides scribedy so as to fit down upon the first series a. Alternately with each two of these rails, wide boards, d cl d, &c., are placed on their edge, and scribed similar to them. '[hese boards are held by transverse bars c e e, Snc., placed at intervals along the bottom of the frame, and scribed into them, the Whole-framework, as shown in the drauings, forming a solid andcompact bed upon which the bed is placed. The bed A is made of pasteboard or papier-madre, which, after being prepared, is glued or secured otherwise to the frame on top of the slats t (t a, and the top made level and polished by This surface may be used for playing billiards upon, either with or Without a cover, as desired, in either case furnishing a firm, even surface, suitable for the purpose, at a small cost, When compared with the tables now in use, in which the bed is made of marble or slate.
Thecushi-ons to be used around my table are similar to those now in use, as also the pockets at the corners and sides. By this construction I have a cheap and light billiard-table, which, from the formation and composition of the .bed, will not be aife'cted by heat or cold, and consequently will not Warp.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is v The construction of a billiard-table by the arrangement of the longitudinal slats a a, transverse slats b b, longitudinal rails c c c, and alternate Wide boards or pieces (lfd d, placed edgewise, and held by the transverse bars e e e, or equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose described, in combination with the papier-mache or pasteboard bed A, applied and prepared as specified. v
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
KARL GUDENOGE. [1.. s.] Witnesses:
, FRANK X. GRoss, v JNO. L. BOONE.
