Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY JosEPH HU- BERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rugby, in the county of Pierce and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gambrels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a gambrel, and has for its object to provide improved means for suspending the same, so that it can be readily raised or lowered.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawing hereto annexed, in which an elevation of the invention is shown.

Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a gambrel of ordinary-construction on which the carcass 6 (shown in dotted lines) is suspended in the usual manner. The gambrel is secured in the loop of a rope 7, which is suspended from a suitable overhead support 8, the rope being wound on the gambrel. One part of the rope is wound in one direction, as at 9, and the other part in the opposite direction, as at 10, that part of the rope which connects these windings being extended, as at 11, behind a post 12, rising from the gambrel at or about the middle thereof. By this arrangement when the gambrel is rotated the rope is wound or unwound, which elevates or lowers the gambrel.

To hold the gambrel at the desired elevation, means are provided for preventing its rotation, so that the rope cannot unwind. These means comprise vertically-swinging arms 13, which are pivoted at 14 to the post 12 and are extensible in opposite directions across the depending ends of the rope. When these arms are extended across the said ends of the rope, as shown in the drawing, the gambrel is prevented from rotating, and the rope therefore cannot unwind. When the gambrel is to be lowered, the arms 13 are swung away from the rope, as shown by dotted lines in the drawing, which releases the gambrel and permits it to rotate to unwind the rope, whereby the gambrel is lowered.

A gambrel suspended as herein described enables the heaviest carcass to be readily elevated or lowered, and the parts are simple in construction and easy to operate.

I claim- 1. The combination with a gambrel, of suspension means therefor comprising a rope wound on the gambrel, and connected on its ends to a support, a post extending from the gambrel, arms pivoted to the post and extensible across the depending ends of the aforesaid rope, to prevent turning of the gambrel and unwinding of the rope.

2. The combination with a gambrel, of suspension means therefor comprising a rope wound on the gambrel, and connected at its ends to a support, and arms carried by the gambrel and extensible across the depending ends of the aforesaid rope to prevent turning of the gambrel and unwinding of the rope.
