To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER G. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Juvenile Savings-Bank, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates'to toy money-boxes and its object is to provide a new and improved juvenile savings-bank which is simple and durable in construction and exceedingly ornamental and arranged to stimulate saving by constantly reminding children and other persons of a home that may be owned if money is saved.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The juvenile savings-bank illustrated in the drawings consists, essentially, of a miniature dwelling or like building A and a miniature lot B. The miniature lot B is in the form of a casin or receptacle adapted to contain water, held with its upper surface continually in contact with the under surface of the top B, and as the latter is made of a porous material it is evident that the water passes into the said top B by capillary attraction to supply the plant-seeds and the like placed on the The bottom of the building A is prefupper surface of the top B with sufficient moisture to cause the same to germinate, and thus produce, on the upper surface of the miniature lot B a growth of plantssuch, for instance, as grass, if grass-seed is used. In order to maintain the water'in constant contact with the top B, a water-supply is arranged on the miniature lot B, preferably in the form of a well D, the top surface of which is a considerable distance above the under surface of the top B, so that when the well D is kept filled with water it is evident that sufficient pressure is exerted by this wellwater onto the water contained in the lotcasing to hold the upper surface thereof constantly in contact with the under surface of the top B. From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the plants are supplied with suflicient moisture to keep the same in a green condition, thus greatly heightening the appearance of the lot B and giving the whole the natural appearance of a house and lot.

The miniature lot B is preferably provided with a suitable railing or fence E, and the top B is provided with a raised portion B representing a walk leading to the entrance of the miniature building A from steps B formed on the casing, as plainly shown in- Figs. 1 and 2. On opposite sides of this raised portion B are formed recesses B in the miniature lot for containing soil sufficiently rich for facilitating plant lifethat is, to permit of growing plants in the soil-to heighten the appearance of the house and lot. The lot-casing may also be provided with recesses B, preferably near the front corners, for the reception of bulbs or miniature flower-pots F, adapted to contain soil and plants to render the entire construction still more attractive.

It is understood that the several minor features mentioned can be varied to a great extent without deviating from my invention, the essential feature of which is to provide an exceedingly ornamental juvenile savings-bank arranged to stimulate savings by constantly reminding children and other persons of a home that may be owned if money is saved, especially as the construction discloses a miniature house and lot on which plant life is active. It will also be noticed that the device is instructive to children and other persons as activeplant life is produced.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. In a juvenile savings-bank, a base therefor, comprising a casing having a porous top and adapted to contain water.
