Description

No. 831.394. PATENTED SEPT. 18, 1906.

APPLICATION FILED 00T.19. 1905.
Wifness es I W a'Z/vzeflfl. W566. MW 1 5 160? M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILMER M. WEBB, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. FOUNTAIN-PEN SUPPORT OR HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed October 19,1905. Serial No. 283.512.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILMER M. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Fountain-Pen Supports or Holders, of which the following is a specification.
one object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, device for a fountain-pen or like structure whereby the latter shall be maintained in an upright or substantially vertical position at all times.
I further desire to provide a holding device for a fountain-pen or similar structure which shall in addition to possessing the above characteristics be of such a nature that even though it be tipped or moved from a position in which the fountain-pen carried by it is vertical it will automatically return to said position when the displacing force is removed.
These objects I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the preferred form of my holder. Fig; 2 is a vertical section of the holder shown in Fig. 1, illustrating a fountain-pen in position therein; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder.
In carrying out my invention I provide a body of relatively heavy material, preferably metal, having within it a recess for the reception of the article to be held upright and with its mass so distributed that it shall at all times tend to maintain the line of said recess and yet eflicient holding substantially vertical, the external surface of the body being curved for this purpose.
In the above drawings, A represents the preferred form of my holder, which consists of a hemispherical piece of metal having 2. cylindrical recess a whose axis is substantially at right angles to the plane surface of the body A. his recess, moreover, is placed so that its axis extends through the center of the circular plane surface and is of such a depth that even though the holder be turned or rolled upon its curved surface so as to bring its plane surface perpendicular to the horizontal support upon which it is carried it will be automatically and forcibly returned to the position in which said plane surface is approximately horizontal. Having these qualities, it will be seen that if a fountain-pen, pencil, or other elongated body, as B, be placed in the recess a it will be maintained in an upright vertical position.
I claim as my invention A holder for a fountain-pen or the like, consisting of a solid hemispherical body having a central recess, the walls of which extend in a line substantially perpendicular to its plane surface, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
