PROTECTOR FOR INCANDESCENT GLOBES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed January 12, 1906. Serial No. 295,750.
To (all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES SCHMIDT, residing at Allegheny, FREDRIcI-I WUNDER- Lrcn, residing at Pittsburg, and J AMES THIBO- DEAU, 1eSidiIlg at Turtle Creek, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, citi zens of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Incandescent Globes, of which the following is a specification, reference'being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in protectors for the bulbs of incandescent lamps, and the invention relates more particularly to a protector adapted to shield the lower end of an electriclight bulb.
The primary object of this invention is to protect the lower end or nipple of an electriclight bulb, whereby when the same is accidentally struck or falls upon a hard surface this portion of the bulb, which is most liable to fracture the same, is shielded.
Briefly described, our improved bulb:-pro tector consists of a metallic cone-shaped cap which is adhesively secured upon the nipple of an electric-light bulb, the cap being adapted to cover the nipple and a portion of the bulb surrounding the nipple.
The detail construction of our improved protector for the bulbs of incandescent lamps will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bulb equipped with our improved protector. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the protector. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan of the protector.
In the accompanying drawings we have illustrated a conventional form of electriclight bulb 1, which is commonly used in con- In manufacturing the bulbs a small nipple 2 is formed centrally of the lower end of the bulb, and it is a well-known fact that when this nipple is struck against a hard surface the entire bulb is fractured and rendered useless.
Our invention aims to protect the nipple 2 of electric-light bulbs, and to accomplish this we have devised a metallic cap 3, said cap consisting of a cone-shaped portion 4, having a peripheral flange 5, said flange being curved to conform to the periphery of the bulb 1, whereby when the inner sides 6 of the flange 5 are provided with cement or adhesive material the cap in its entirety can be secured to the bulb, whereby the cone-shaped portion 4 ivilllbshield and protect the nipple 2 of the The protector of the cap is preferably made of strong and durable metal; but in no wise do we care to confine ourselves specifically to the use of metal, as vulcanized flber and the like substances may be readily used, and in this connection we also do not care to limit ourselves to the one-piece structure, as the cap can be readily made of two pieces of material, the flange being an independent piece to which the cone-shaped portion of the cap may be secured. j
Such changes in the construction of the cap or protector as are permissible by theappended claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
WVhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with an incandescent lamp, of a protective cap for the tip of said lamp, said cap being formed of elastic material, and embodying an inverted-cone-shaped body to receive the lamp-tip, with an integral flange flared to fit against the lower end of the lamp and adhesively secured thereto.
' In testimony whereof we afliX our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES SCHMIDT. FREDRIOH WUNDEELIOH. JAMES A. THIBODEAU.
