WELL-DRILLING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed January 30, 1906. Serial No. 298,576.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD D. SHRYOGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in Well-Drilling Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.
In Letters Patent No. 781,234, granted to me January 31, 1905, I have shown and described power-transmitting mechanism connecting the crank-shaft with the drillingcable for imparting motion to the latter when spudding, and the specific means disclosed therein consists of a spudding-line connected at one end to the crank and at its opposite end to the drilling-cable, with a sheave arranged to properly direct the movement of the spudding-line.
In the present invention the sheave of my former patent is displaced by a lever which operatively connects the actuating crank and spudding-line in such manner that the pull upon the crank is in substantially the plane of movement thereof, while the pull on the spudding line is in a plane oblique thereto.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drilling-machine frame, showing the power-transmitting lever in inclined position; and Fig. 2 is a rear end view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views showing the lever arranged horizontally. Fig. 5 illustrates the lever mounted upon the front portion of the frame.
I show only such portions of the machine as are necessary for illustrating the proper position of the particular mechanism to which the invention relates, as the completed machine may be fully'understood by referring to the above-mentioned patent.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the frame of the drilling-machine; 3, the bandwheel shaft, and 4 the crank.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a lever 5 is fulcrumed between its ends in inclined position on support 6, the outer end thereof extending into the plane of movement of crank 4, to which it is connected by pitman 6, the pitman and lever being united by a ball-and-socket joint 7. The jerk-line 8 extends from the inner end of lever 5 to the vertically-oscillating arm 9, carrying sheave 10, aroundwhich the drilling-cable 11 passes from spool 12.
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the construction is the same, excepting that the power-transmitting lever 5 is mounted to oscillate in a horizontal plane.
In Fig. 5 a lever 5, similar to lever 5 of Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted on the front portion of frame 2, being connected to crank 4 by pitman 6. In this arrangement the jerkline 8 is much shorter than in the constructions above described.
In all of the constructions the outer end of the power-transmitting lever oscillates in or through a line intersecting the plane of movement of the crank, so that the pull upon the lever is in substantially the plane of movement thereof, thus relieving the crank and its shaft of twisting or distorting strains. The change from a rotary to a reciprocating motion is accomplished without loss of power, there being no friction to diminish the same or unduly wear the parts. The power is directly applied for securing the rapid reciprocations necessary for the spudding operation.
I claim v 1. In a spudding attachment for welldrilling machines, the combination of a shaft having a crank, a lever intersecting the plane of movement of the crank, the lever-fulcrum being at one side of said plane of movement, a connection between the lever and crank, and a drilling-cable operatively connected to the lever. I
2. In a spudding attachment for welldrilling machines, the combination of a shaft having a crank, a lever intersecting the plane of movement of the crank, a connection between the lever and crank, a drilling-cable, and a spudding-line extending from the lever to the cable. 1
3. In a spudding attachment for welldrilling machines, the combination of a machine-frame, a shaft journaled in the frame, a crank on the shaft, the crank being located outside the frame, a drilling-cable operative Within the frame, a lever fulcrumed to the frame with one end intersecting the plane of movement of the crank, a connection between the projecting end of the lever and the crank, and a spudding-nne connecting the lever with the drilling-cable.
4. In a spudding attachment for welldrilling machines, the combination of a machine-frame, a shaft journaled therein having a crank, a lever fulcrumed between its ends on an inclined axis with its lowermost end intersecting the plane of movement of the crank, a drilling-cable operative in the machine-frame, and a spudding-line connecting thelupper end of the lever with the drillingcab e.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

W. E. SYKEs, PEARL MASON.
