WELL-DRILLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,227, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed May 24, 1904. Serial No- 209,436.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD D. SHRYOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVell-Drilling Machines, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to well-drilling ma' chines, and more particularly to an improvement in the apparatus shown in my applica tion for Letters Patent filed December 15, 1903, Serial No. 185,212.
The invention has reference to the spudding mechanism; and it consists primarily of an oscillating sheave-carrying support adapted, preferably, to be actuated by the spuddingline shown in my above-recited application for imparting the necessary movement to the drilling-cable.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of adrilling-machine equipped with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the machine-frame and a portion of the spudding mechanism. Fig. 4 is adetail view.
As the structural details and operation of the drilling-machine are fully described in my above-recited application, the presentdescription will be confined to the improvement herein claimed and the parts of the apparatus immediately associated therewith.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the machine-frame,and 3 the main shaft journaled therein, having at one end crank 4. and at its opposite end band-wheel 5, which is driven by belt6 from engine 7. Journaled on the frame at the rear of crank 4t and at an angle thereto is sheave 8, over which passes spudding-line 9. Shcave 8 is so disposed as to direct the line in the plane of movement of wrist 4 of the crank, one end of the line being connected thereto, while its main portion extends forward in a diagonal direction and operatively connects with the drilling-cable. In my former application this connection is made by means of an ordinary shoe which embraces the cable. This arrangement is objectionable, as there is and is thus adapted to oscillate longitudinally of the machine-frame. Arm 11 is forked at its upper end and carries sheave .13 over which drilling-cable 10 passes as it comes from reel 14 and ascends from anchorpulley a 15 to crown-pulley 16. The spudding-line 9 is detachably connected to arm 11, preferably by means of a clevis 17, formed with hook extremities 17, which engage eyes 18 of arm 11 at opposite sides of sheave 18., A rope 19 may be connected with arm 11 and extend downward through pulley 20, secured to mast 21, by means of which the arm may be conveniently held in operative position for connecting the spudding-line thereto.
l/Vith the sheave-carrying arm proposed by the present invention there is absolutely no wear on the drilling-cable as it is deflected in the operation of spudding, and it is impossible for the spudding-line connection to shift vertically, an objection incident to my prior construction. Hence the successive deflections of the drilling-cable are uniform, and the same is necessarily true of the working strokes of the tools. I claim 1. A drilling-machine comprising a frame, an arm mounted to oscillate in the frame and adapted to operatively engage and deflect the drilling-cable, a shaft having a crank, a sheave intersecting the plane of rotation of the crank and arranged at an angle thereto, and a spudding-line passing over the sheave and connected at one end to the crank and at its opposite end to said arm.
