Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. IGREEN- woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of I/Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Educational Appliances, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in educational devices, and more particularly to maps.

The object in view is the. provision of means for enabling the pointing-out on an outline of a map of a particularvpoint and the verifying of the accuracy of such pointing out by the substitution of a complete map for the outline.

With these and further objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of an apparatus embodying the features of the present invention, the complete map being indicated in position. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the same with the outline-map in position. Fig. 3 represents a view in rear elevation of the device indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section taken on the plane of line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a similar section taken on the plane of line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents a transverse section taken on the plane of line 6 6 of Fig. 3 and looking downwardly.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a framework of any ordinary type provided with ahead 2 or other supporting means for a transparent plate 3. In the rear of the plate 3 are fixed slats 4 4, which are 'preferablydisposed transversely of the frame 1. The lower edge of each of the slats 4 is spaced slightly from the upper edge of the next lower slat for purposes hereinafter mentioned. In the rear of the frame 1 is arranged any suitable slide for carrying movable slats 5 5, said slats ,5 being each positioned with its lower edge disposed between the upper edge ofone of the slats 4 and the lower edge of the next higher slat, the space between the lower edge of one of the slats 4 and the upper edge of the next succeeding slat 4 affording room for admitting the respective slat 5 and permitting the same to slide vertically past the slats 4, one of the slats 5 being provided for each of the slats 4 and being adapted when lowered to assume a position in front of the respective slats 4, so that when the slats 5 are in their lower position all of the slats 4 will be concealed and the front faces of the slats 5 exposed beneath the glass or other suitable transparent surface 3.-

It will of course be observed that a reverse relation of the parts may be provided and the slats 5 slid upwardly in position in front of the slats 4 instead of sliding downwardly.

The slide arranged in the rear of the frame 1 may be of any form preferred, and as showing an operative structure I have illustrated said slide as consisting of vertically-arranged bars 6 6, positioned, preferably, near the ends of the frame 1, and, as seen in Fig. 6, said bars 6 are slidingly mounted in grooves 7 7, formed at the corners of the frame 1 in any suitable manner, as by blocks 8 8, fixed to said frame, and horizontal bars 9, fixed to the frame and spaced from the blocks 8 at their ends. A plate 10 is fixed to the frame 1 at each corner thereof and overhangs the groove 7 for limiting the bars 6 against lateral displacement, so that said bars while free to move longitudinally are prevented from undesirable movement. Rods 11 11 connect the bars 6, one of said rods 11 being preferably provided for each of the slats 5. Thus when the slide made up of the parts described is moved vertically the slats 5, which are connected by any suitable means to the rods 11, are correspondingly moved and may be shifted from the concealed position (indicated in Fig. 4) to the exposed position, (indicated in Fig. 5,) it being clearly apparent that when the slats 5 are concealed the slats 4 are ex posed and when the slats 5 are exposed the slats 4 are concealed thereby. Hence it follows that if a map such as indicated in Fig. 1 is printed upon the slats 4 when the slats 5 are in their concealed position the map will be exposed, and if an outline-map, such as seen in Fig. 2, is printed upon the front face of the slats 5 said outline-map will become apparent and the map seen in Fig. 4 become concealed upon the slats 5 being moved downwardly to their exposed position.

In practice I propose to use the present improved apparatus as a means of instruction, one use consisting in the testing of the memory by the pointing out on an outlinemap of one particular place and then withdrawing the outline-map and exposing the complete map for determining the accuracy of the selection of the place undertaken to be pointed out. The employment of the transparent plate or sheet of glass 3 facilitates the positioning of the pointer over the particular point on the map and enables the retention of the pointer in such position while one of the maps is being concealed and the other exposed.

What I claim is a s.

1. In an educational device, the combination with a frame, of a set of slats carried thereby, a complete map formed on said slats, :a second set of slats carried by the frame and movable with respect to the first slats for being moved in front of or in rear of the first-mentioned slats, and an outline-'map on said second set of slats corresponding to the complete map of the first-mentioned .set of slats.

2. In an educational device, the combination-With a frame, of sets of slats adapted to be alternately exposed vand concealed, acornpleteconfigurationononeof said sets of slats,

and an outline configuration on the other of said sets of slats corresponding to the coinplete configuration.

3. In an educational device, the combination with a frame, of a set of slats fixedly carried thereby, bars slidably mounted at the sides of said frame, means for guiding the bars in their movement, a set of slats carried by said bars and with the first=mentioned set of slats in such position as to be capable of being movedin front of and in the rear of said first-mentioned slats, a complete configuration car'ried by one of said sets of slats, and an outline configuration corresponding to the complete configuration carried by the other set of slats.
