Be it known that I, -WILLIAM ULARKE, a
subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Ayr, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steel Piles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to steel piles usually employed in the erection of coder-dams for the purpose of subaqueous construction, such as or'bridge-piers, also breakwaters, quaywalls, 800.; and the object thereofis to provide improved steel ilin for both temporary and permanent wor w iich latter is to become incorporated Witliand' forms a part of structures, such asJstaining-walls, foundations, caissons, and for various uses of a similar nature. The invention is fully disclosed in the following spec fication. of which theaccompanying drawings forr a part, in which the separate parts cl myiniprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 shows a crosssectional view of oneiorm of my improved steel piles, also two ioints made with the adjoining members of a ine of driven piles. Fig. 2 illustrates in plan view various forms of such piles and their adaptation to various manners of combining the same, and Fig. 3 shows in plan view a modified form of my invention especially adapted to form a flush face when joined to'-' gether.

These piles are rolled to the proper I shape with flanges and webs of dimensions to corrcs ond to the requirements of the special work or which they are designed. The additional recess (1, oblong in cross-section, is utilized for the purpose of admitting calking material, as shown in Fig. 1, as soon as the piles are driven to place; For temporary workjutc, oakum, waste, or clay is suitable, which when introduced and rammed into place will give the proper filling, will act as a wedge by driving the oblique sides of the dovetail into the corresponding sides of their recesses, and thereby making perfect and easy connection with watertight joint.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a combination of? straight, bent, and segmental pilessuch as at e a right-angle corner-pile, at f a series of piles, at 9 an oilsetpile, and at h a series of segmental piles, all provided with dovetails?) and recesses c and with a )crtures (l to receive the above-mentioned calliing material; The shaping of these piles in the various forms can easily be eilccted in thcrolling-mills, and such shaping takes place entirely in the web of the same. 1
- In Fig. 3 I have shown a straight pile i, made of the form of U-bcams, with dovetails I) and their recesses c and d on the outer faces of the opposite flan es. When driven toether, these piles willl orm on one side straight flush faces, while the other side will present the projecting flanges locked together in the manner above described. This system of piling is especially useful whenever it is desired to incorporate driven piles into work which is designed for permanent use, such as piers. By backing up the inner face of such piling with concrete or other building stone material the rojectin flanges form a good I lock therewitli, while the outer face will present a smooth and even surface. For the purpose of making these joints permanent and durable it is designed to place in therecesses (Z a mixture of sal-annnoniac-and irondust. This calking material after having become. set forms a hard air and Water tight 'oint and tends to make a system of steel pil- 1n oi'this kind, driven and joined together in this manner, a continuous mass impervious. and solid. Such piles, if desired, can be made additionally strong and non-yielding by riveting or bolting a proper cap of U-bcams or angle-iron' to the to of the same.
Having fully escribed my invention, what XOG I claim as new and desire to secure b Lettcrs Patent, is I 1. In a steel pile, consisting of it rolled shape having a web rnemberand two flanges, the latter provided With an interlocking device consisting of a dovetail which forms a. part of one flange and is projected from the outer face thereof, and a dovetailed recess which forms part of the other flange and is extending into the face thereof, both dovetail and. recess to be of corresponding shape and dimension to admit the insertion ofthe dovetail of one pile into the recess of another pile to be adjoined thereto so as to form a continuous series, and means for inakin said joint Watertight by the introduction oi" calliing material into a place provided for this purpose and forming a part of the dovetailed recess above mentioned, substantially as shown and described.
