Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. GLEN- DENON, a citizen of the United States, residing atIIealclsburg, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and useful fire-Fence Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire-fence stretchers.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely strong, simple, durable, inexpensive, and thoroughly efficient device by means of which the wires of a fence can be easily and quickly stretched in order to enable them to be properly secured upon the fence-posts.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing part of a fence in order to illustrate the manner of using the improved device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The improved wire-fence stretcher of this invention comprises a body portion or member A and a handle B.
The member A is formed in its upper surface with a longitudinally-extending openended slot 1, which is approximately V- shaped in cross-section. If it be supposed that the device is held with the handle B extending vertically upward, one wall 2 of the slot 1 will be disposed in approximately vertical position, so as to be parallel or nearly parallel with the side walls 3 of the member A. The other wall 4 of the approximately V-shaped slot 1 extends at an incline with respect to the parallel walls 3 of the memberA.
The handle B is suitably connected with or formed integral with the upper portion of the straight or approximately vertical wall 2 of the member A at one end thereof. The handle B is formed with an abutment 10,
which extends laterally across the broad upper end of the slot 1, so as to produce an entrance portion 11 between the upper edge of the inclined wall 4 and the adjacent portion of the abutment 10. The lower wall 12 of the abutment 10 is cut on a slight downward incline with respect to the straight vertical wall 2 ofthe slot 1, so as to form, in efiect, a wire-receiving notch at the juncture of the wall 12 with the upper portion of the wall 2. The handle B preferably is tapered from the abutment 1O upward and is provided adjacent its upper end with a perforation 14., constituting attaching means for a flexible element 15, which is suitably secured at its other end to an intermediate portion of a lever 16.
In using the improved device the line-wire 17 of a fence is passed through the lateral entrance portion 11 of the slot 1. The lever 16 is then enga ed with a fence-post or other object and rocdred or manipulated so that the handle B will be drawn rearwardly. This rearward movement of the handle will cause one portion of the wire to be pinched or gripped in the V-shaped lower end of the notch 1 and another portion of the wire to be engaged by the wire-receiving notch formed by the lower wall or shoulder 12 of the abutment l0 and the straight or vertical wall 2. In this way an intermediate portion of the wire will be bent so as to cause the same to be stretched, and thus permit it to be nailed or otherwise secured upon the post. The handle B preferably is disposed at an angle slightly less than a right angle with respect to the member A, so that the lateral entrance portion 11 will extend obliquely across one side of the handle, as shown. The lower rear end of the member A preferably is rounded, as indicated at 20, and the upper end of the handle B is rounded, as indicated at 21.
By reason of the fact that the entire device of this invention can be formed of a single piece of material and, further, by reason of the fact that the slot 1,with its lateral entrance portion 11, can be readily formed it will be obvious that the Wire-fence stretcher of this invention is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction. Furthermore, it has been found to be thoroughly eflicient in operation, The forward end of the V- shaped slot 1 constitutes a wire-receiving portion which pinches the wire and prevents it from slipping, and the abutment 10, with its downwardly-inclined lower wall 12 ,forms a wire-receivi-n notch which, as before explained, efiectua ly cooperates with the wire-receiving portion of the member A, so as to permit a wire to be easily and quickly stretched.
What is claimed is- 1. A wire-fence stretcher comprising :a member having a wire-receiving slot, and a handle extending at an angle to said. slot, the length of said wire -receiving slot being greater than the Width .of said handle.
2,. A WlI'6-- fence stretcher comprising ,a member having a wire-receiving portion at one end thereof and a handle extending at an angle with respect to the opposite end of said member and having a wire engag'ing abutment projecting over one endof said member.
:3. A wire* fence stretcher comprising a member having a V-shaped notch in one end, and an angularly-extending handle connected mm the other end of said member and having an abutment forming a wire-receiv- Zing notch.
4. A wire -fene.e tretcher comp i ing a member having a slot which is approximately ll-Shaped in cross-section, and .a handle having an abutment extending across the upper end of said slot and terminating above one wall thereof to form a lateral entrance portion for said slot.
' 5. A wire-fence stretcher comprising a member having a wire-receiving slot in its upper surface formed with an approximately said handle being disposed at an angle which is slightly less than a right angle with respect to said member.
