This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in car construction, and articularly tothe side walls of' a car, including the methodv of bracing said sidewall, the same lbeing designed for use in connection with passenger-cars, baggage-cars, &c.
With these Vobjects in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement,
will be hereinafter described an afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, 1 indicates lates which constitute the slde wallsj of t ecar, said plates servin as the webs of a plate-girder structure. ong the lower edge of the plates 1 are anglesl 2, upon which may be arranged furring-strips 3 for supporting the floor 4. These angles 2 serve as a tension-flange of the plate girder structure. In tead of being formed 'of an attached angle this tensionlange can be made by flanging the lower edges of the plates 2, as is obvious.

At the point where it is desired tohave a door the diagonal post is omitted and the plate constituting the side wall is interrupted at this point or cut away to provide the' door-opening. Window-open- -ings are also provided, and one of these wmdow-openings is shown at the end of the car,
the same having a reinforcing sill-angle 11 and a short diagonal angle 12 arranged thereunder, as shown at the left in Fig. 2. Where a window-opening is provided in the length of thecar between the bolster-points, it is obvious that any interruption of the vertical posts or diagonals must be compensated for in some manner,"so as to strengthen the carat the window-point.
Referring now to Fig. 2 and to the windowopenin 13 -at the right hand of said ligure, it will ie seen that the window-opening occurs at a point which normally should be occupied by a vertical post. By a change in the method of trussing at this point the strains in thevertical member are eliminated, and in the absence of the ost this point is utilized to splicdthe plates orming the side wall, and in addition `marginal an les 14 are riveted to the side walls around 't e window-opening. At the junction of these mar inal angles connection-plates 15 are secure in position, the same extending over and being riveted to the ad'acent di onals 9.

The presence of the marginal angles around the windows and the connection between said marginal angles and the diagonals does not weaken the structure. If desired, a vertical post could be arran ed under the window-opening; but I deem t is unnecessary, as the splicefplate will serve every pu ose of a vertical post at this point.
It is o vious that the trussed side \wall herein shown is useful in connection with types of cars other than passenger-cars where IOO -it is desirable to carry the entire load on the .sides of the car.
