The arii'iaiure and coinniutaloi of the. mani dynamo are removably secured on the arma ture-shaft, preferablyas follows: The armaturc-shalt is enlarged in diameter between its ends and at one end of the enlarged central portion is provided with a shoulder or ilangc q. The armature and co'nimutator are carried by a sleeve G, which is keyed or spliiicd ou the large central portion ofthe shaft, with one end against one side *if 'the'sh'oulder g. Surrounding the shaft on the bpposite side or the shoulder g is a clamping-sleeve y', Figs. 1 and having perforated lugs through wi'iich pass screws into threaded holes in the armature-sleeve. By tightening the screws the two sleeves are drawn up tightly against opposite sides of the shoulder and iirnily secured. This manner of securing the armature-sleeve is much superior to the usual method of fastening the armature on the shaft by a nut or nuts screwed on a. threaded part of the shaft, as in such case special threads must be cut on the shaft and nut, and it is a matter of considerable difficulty to attachaiid detach the part-s,`usually necessitating special tools. Then, too, the armature is liable to work loose when itis driven in opposite directions, as it is when the apparatus is used in car1ighting.` By' the construction deseribed the armature can be quickly and easily attached' anddetached with an ordinary wrench and cannot work loose by reason 'of the rot-ation of the armature in opposite directions.
H represents the field-magnet frame, and H the armature of the4 auxiliary dynamo. This auxlliary field-magnet frame, like that of the vmain dynamo, preferably consists ot an open-ended shell or ring and is detachably secured at its inner end to he outer end ot' the head .D oi the main frame., as by screws 7i. To the outer end of the auxiliary field-frame H is detachably secured, by screws h', a ring I, which supports the brushes t' of the aluxillary dynamo. AThe open out-er -end oi' this brush-supporting ring is closed by a cap or cover K, which is removably secured in place by some suitable means, preferably by bayonet-j oints formed by screws la, which projecfu i'roni the sides of the brush-supporting ring I and engage in angular slots 7c in the rim of the. cap. When the screws are tightened, the cap is securely held in place, and by loosening the screws the cap can be detached in a well known manner. The auxiliary dynamo is thus also completely inclosed and protected against the entrance Iof water, dust, &c.; but its brushes can be. easily seen and reached for any purpose by removing the' remove the brushes and their holders, this caribe done with little trouble by detaching the brushsuppori'ing ring I. The opposite end of the shaft projects from the other head D of the main dynamo-frame, and on this end of the sliaf t is detachably'secured a chain-wheel )I or other wheel for driving "the armature-shaft.
