and it will be noted that the journal portions 1D are in different horizontal and vertical -planes, so that lthe alternating grate-bars 4o vwith and without depending legs can be held in the same horizontal plane when all the parts are in their normal positions, as most clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, l5, and 1G. 'lhe journal portions D are cmmeeted by means of a series of obliquely-arranged webs D2, and at the end of each journal portion is-arranged an inwardly-extending locking-lug D3, which is adapted to engage a curved laterally-projecting lug C, arranged upon the opposite 5o ends of-eaeh bearin g portion Ci, said lockinglugs serving to lock the grate-bar and the rocker-bars together, thereby preventing the. displacement of the grate-bars, it being understood that in order to connect the grate- 5 5 bars and rocker-bars together' it is only neces- .sary to arrange the said parts at such an angle that the lugs D will clear the curved lugs C and when the parts are brought back to their normal positions the overlapping lugs 6o D3 will engage the laterally-projeeting lugs Rocker-bars D are arranged in a cradle E, consisting of the side members E and the connecting cross-bars E2, said side members of the cradle being provided with outwardlyprojecting trunnions E3, which are journaled in the bearings A, produced in the side niembers of the trame. The ends of the rockerbars are provided with knife-edge bearinglugs D, which fit into and rest within the `ilshaped openings E4, produced in the side members E of the" cradle E, the openings E4 being sulliciently wide to permit a rocking motiono'f the lugs Dl therein, and it will be noted by reference to Figs. 13 and 14 that the lower end ot' the lug` D4, which forms the pivot et the rocking bar D, is slightly labove a line drawn through the cen-ters ol' the journal portions D, so that when the saidl rocking bars are rocked or vibrated the journal portions ,vill be raised and lowered, thereby causing the grate-bars to be alternately raised and lowered, and by rocking the bars D and causing the grate-bars to move up and down the ifuel arranged thereon can be agitated, so asto sift the ashes through the grate and work the einders and non-combustible portions ol the luel up to the top surface, soithat it can be raked vfrom one section of the grate to the other, if' desired.
In order to rock the bars D for the purpose ot moving the grate-bars up and down, l pro'- vide the rear rocker-bar oi each section with an integral depending arm D5, the lower horizontal member D thereofY being adapted to be engaged by a shoe F, arranged upon shaker-bar F, sliding in brackets F2, depen.-;lv ing from the front and rear members ol the frame, the 'forward end of said shaker-bar b eing connected to the lever l, pivoted atthe iront of he frame, a detachable handle E* ron being adapted to be connected. to the upper end of the said'lever F3. lt will ot course be understood that inasmuch the grate-seetions are independent there will be a separate shoe for each grate-section and also a separate shaker-bar ll" and separate lever F3. By referring to Fig. 2% it will be noted that when the shakerbar E is pushed 'rearwardly the shoe E will engage the depending bail and canse the rocker-bar D to be rocked in the direction indicated, and it will of course be understood. that the two rocker-bars move in.
. unison and when said bars are rocked one set of grate-bars willbe elevated slightly and the alternating set will be dropped or lowered :-'.lightly, as most clearly shown, and by working thelever E back and forth the entire series ol' grated ars can be alternately moved up and down, so as to thoroughly agitato the fuel upon that section of the grate. After the grate-bars have been shaken, as herein sliown and described',4 the parts are returned to their' normal positions, as shown in Fig. 2, and, iil desired, the other grate-section. can have its bars shaken in a similar manner by operating the other lever F3. As previously stated, `the cinders, ashes, 86e., of one section can be shifted or raked to the other section tor the purpose of dumping, and in Fig. 4 l have shown the rear section of grate as being l dumped, and for the purpose oi accomplishing this operation I employ the depending arms E5, which are connected to the lon itudinal c rossbars E2 ofthe cradle E, said epending arms E5 being preferably arranged ,cradle'is provided With the depending arm and that a separate dumpingv bar and lever is employed for each section. vBy reference to Fig. 4 it will beseen that when the dumpingbar is pushed rearwardly the cradle is rocked in the frame and the entirev series of gratebars carried to an inclined position, and owing to the fact that the said grate-barsare interlocked with the rocker-bars all danger-ofdsplacement is avoided. As the cradle is rocked the depending bail D5 is swung rearwardly and upwardly, and the shoe Fis caused to move rearwardly a short distance; butf when the grate-section is returned to its normal position the de ending bail' will drop into the recess F5 of t e shoe, and in order to prevent any possible disengagement of these parts I provide the shoe With an upwardlyextending in clined heel-piece F, `which serves to guide the depending bail into the recess F5. By operating the other lever G the other section of the grate can be dumped, and it Will of course be understood that either section'can be dumped when desired or both can be ydumped at the same time, if required. It
will thus be seen that I provide a simple, durable, and elicient means for agitating or shaking gratebars' of each section and also for dumping the entire section.
The forward ends of the grate-bars are in# clined or beveled, as shown at C, and are 1indercut at their rear ends, as shown at C7, so that the adjacent ends of the grate-bars overlap veach other, as shown in Fig. 2, and in order to prevent a clear open space at the front and rear of the grate I provide the front pf the frame with a series of rearwardly-projecting iingei's A7, undercut, as shown at As, tov overlap the inclined front of the front grate-bars, and the rear side of the frame is formed 'With forwardly-projecting fingers A", beveled, as shown at A1", and adapted to be pverlapped by the rear ends of the rear gratears.
The side members of the cradlesare rotected by means of detachabletoothedars H, which rest` upon the said side members of the cradle and are provided with depending wedge-shaped .lugcf-F, which iit into the'entrance to the Vjshaped opening E4 and preventany longitudinal movement of the said bars H when the cradles are rocked or tilted. The face of the bar H between the teeth is inclined, as shown at H2, in order to direct ashes Within the frame.
From the lforegoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings,
it'will be seen that I provide the combined shaking and dum ing device capable of carrying out all of' t e objects hereinbefore reerred to.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I'olaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In-a grate, a frame, a cradle journaled in the frame, rocker-bars, carried by the cradle,
said rocker-bars having journal portions in alternatingplanes, Webs connecting said portions, the journal portions being provided at their ends with inwardly-extending lugs, and
a plurality of grate-bars, said bars resting in the journal portions of the. rocker-bars, and
engaged by the said lugs.
2. In a urnacegrate, the combination with the grate-bars, having bearing I ortions provided with laterally-projecting ugs," of
the rocker-bars having journal portions provided with inwardl' -extending end lugs adapted to engage t e lugs of the bars, together with means for rocking the said bars. 3. In. a furnace-grate, the combination with a series of grate-bars having bearing ortions each provided with laterallypro jecting lugs, the bearing portions of adjacent bars being in different horizontal planes, of rocker-bars having journal portions adapted to engage said bearing portions and provided With lugs adapted to coact with the lugs' thereof, and means for rocking said rocken bars.
4. Ina furnace-grate the combination/With the cradle and means for rocking the same, of the rocker-bars mounted in the cradle, gratebars arranged thereon, and detachable toothed bars arranged upon the ends of the cradle and adapted to move therewith.
5. In a furnace-grate, a dumping-section comprising a plurality of gratebars, rockerbars sup orting the gratebars, cradles supporting ie rocker-bars, said cradles havin side and connecting end members, the side members having notches therein, and detachable toothed bars resting on the. end members of the Icradles, and depending lugs carried byvsaid toothed bars and adapted to engage the notches, as and for the purpose M.
