' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES IIALPIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE JAMES IIALPIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROCKING GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,754, dated December 3, 1895.
A lication filed June I7, 1895. serial No. 553,020. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HALPIN, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rocking Grates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a rocking grate for furnaces and other heaters; and it consists in novel features of construction that will hereinafter be fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure Iis a top view of my improved grate. Fig. 11 is a vertical section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a side elevation of one of the grate-bars and its connecting-arm, a portion of the wings being removed on a sectionline to afford an unobstructed View of the connecting-arm. Fig. IV is a detail vertical section of the bracket, showing the movable block in its raised position. Fig. V is a detail vertical section on the line V V, Fig. II, looking inward. Fig. VI is a detail perspective view of the bracket. Fig. VII is a perspective view of the movable block.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the supporting-ring, in which the bars 2 are j ournaled. These parts may be of any preferred form, as they form no part of my invention. On the under side of each bar is an ear 3, which is arranged to be engaged by the socket 4 of a connecting-arm 5, which arm above the socket is provided with lips 6, that bear against the sides of the ear 3 and prevent side movement of the socket on the ear.
7 designates an operating-bar with which the connecting-arms 5 are pivotally connected, and 8 is a rocking-lever pivoted to the operating-bar and pivoted at 9 to bracket 10, supported at one side of the grate-bar-supporting ring 1. The lever 8 is operated by ahandlehaving a socket 12, that fits the end of said lever.
The bracket 10 has a slot 13, arranged to receive one end of a block 14. This block is provided for the purpose of limiting the movement or throw of the rocking-lever 10in rocking the grate-bars, so that a sufficient movement is permitted that the ashes may be shaken from the fire, but not a sufficient movement to throw the bars into dumping position. Therefore when the block 14 is in the position. shown in Fig. I and in full lines in Fig. II the grate may be freely rocked without danger of dumping. The position shown in Figs. IV and VII and in dotted lines, Fig. II, is that in which the block is placed when it is desired to dump the ashes. The block has wings 14, by which it is supported when tilted, and side flanges 15 at either side that bearagainst the under side of flanges 10 on the bracket 10 to hold the block in place when in locking position. It is provided with projections 16, by which it may lifted to shift it, and it has a nose 17, that extends down over the face 18 of the bracket.
When it is desired to dump the cinders, &c. from the fire, the block 14 is raised and thrown into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. II, and the rocking-lever is free to move over far enough to throw the grate-bars into dumping position.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a grate-support having a bracket provided with a face-piece and side flanges in rear of the face-piece, a lever pivoted to the bracket, a rocking gratebar, connection between the lever and the gratebar, and the movable block having a nose fittingbetween the face-piece and the lever, and side flanges adapted to engage the flanges on the bracket; substantially as described.
2. The combination of the grate-support having a bracket provided with a face-piece and side flanges, in rear of the face-piece, a lever pivoted to the bracket, a rocking gratebar, connection between the grate-bar and the lever, and the movable blockhaving a nose fitting between the face-piece and the lever, side projections, side wings, and side flanges; substantially as described.
JAMES HALPIN.
In presence of E. S. KNIGHT, N. FINLEY.
