UNITED STATES PATENT ornron.
EDWARD A. BROWN, OF CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11` 1906.
Application filed December 2. 1905. Serial No. 290,024.
Further Objects and advantages will appear from the following description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the parts of the apparatus applied to a curve and illustrating the manner of its use in determining the degree of a right hand curve. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of one of the standards and the cross-arm which 'may be applied thereto, the cross-arm being shown detached. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the standard shown in Fig. 2.
In some of the operations capable of being performed by the apparatus-such, for example, as in determining the elevation or curvature of atrack -three members or devices are used, as shown in Fig. 1. Two of these are indicated at 6' 6 and are identical, and therefore a description of one will be suflicient for both. Each consists of a standard 7, conveniently made of wood, say,'three feet high and six inches wide, reduced, however, at the foot to four inches in width, as indicated at 8, to fit upon the top of a rail. This foot is provided with a clamp consisting of two metal plates 9 and 10, connected bya bolt 11, which eXtends through the foot and which may be clamped by a hand-nut 12 to draw the plates against the sides of the head of the rail and bind the same thereto, so that the standard will not fall. At the head the standard has at each side edge thereof a hole 13 to receive a pin 14, over which a sight may be taken, the pin being put in the hole on one side for a right-hand curve and in the hole on the other side for a left-hand curve. The standard also has an extensible slide 15, conveniently made of aluminium or other metal, which slides in a longitudinal groove in the front of the standard and is graduated, so that it may be used to indicate the degree of elevation by extending the same above the top of the standard. The standard also has in the top a Spirit-level 16 to plumb and level the same.
The remaining member of the apparatus is indicated as a whole at 17 and comprises a track gage and level, as well as a standard with a graduated arm for determining curvature. The beam of the track-gage is indicated at 18, having on the upper edge thereof a Spirit-level 19 and stepped at one end, as at 20, forinclined track. It also has on the side thereof two metal cleats 21, forming a widthgage. Attachable to one end of this beam by means of a bolt 22 is a standard 23, which has at thefoot a clamp (indicated at 24) similar in all respects to the clamp at the foot of the members 7. At the upper end the standard has a crosswise slot or mortise 243, adapted to receive a well-fitting block 25 at the inner end of a graduated cross-arm 26, which has a pointer 27 slidable thereon. The standard also has a Spirit-level 28 at the top. The standard 23 is the same height as the other Standards, and the arm 26 is preferably about two feet long.
In use the beam 18 may be detached from the standard 23 and used as a simple track level or gage. For alining, curve, and elevation work the standard is attached to the beam and the cross-arm put in place. This slot eXtends clear through the top of the standard, so that the cross-arm may be put in from either side, thus adapting it for either right or left hand work. For Straight-line work the arm 26 can be left oif and the sights taken over the three Standards. When taken down, the parts of the several devices can be arranged fiatwise and conveniently packed for transportation. The means described enable practically all operations in track building or repairing to 'be performed.
