To all whom it'n'tcty concern: I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO JOHN T. MATTHEWS AND ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES V. WALLACE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CROSS-LINE BUCKLE.
Be it known that I, REZIN B. BENFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the countyof Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Cross-Line Buckles,of which the following is a specification. i
The object of this invention is to provide a novel form of cross-line buckle embodying a construction which may be cheaply manuis a top plan view of the buckle.
factured and which facilitates the attachment, detachment, and adjustment of'the strap parts connected therewith in the prac thereto. Fig. 2 is' a perspective view show ing the buckle alone. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line X X ofFig. 4. Fig. 4
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the long line is indicated atl and the shortline at 2. The buckle is preferably made of wire of suitable gage to lend the necessary strength and rigidity thereto, this construction reducingthe cost of manufacture and simplifying the 7 form of the buckle in an evident manner.
Specifically describing the invention, the buckle comprises a main frame 3 ofapproxi- Inately rectangular form, an auxiliary frameplece 4, pro ectmg from one side of the mam frame 3 and connected with the latter at a point intermediate the ends of its sides. The frame-piece 4 is of approximately U form, and
the sides of the same are attached to the.
sides of the frame 3 bymeans of a maincros'sbar 5. The cross-bar 5 is connectedat its ends with the. sides of the frame 3 and is formed with loops or eyes 6, receiving not only the sides of the framej3, but also the terniinalsof the sides of the frame-piece 4. The terminals of the sides of the frame-piece Specification of Letters Patent.
3 Application filed December 22, 1905, Serial No. 292,994.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
4 are formed with grooved portions 7, which are engaged by the loops or eyes 6.
" In order to prevent the cross-bar 5 from slipping along the sides of the frame 3, it is designed to form grooves in the frame sides as well, so that the part 5 is interlocked virtually with both the frame 3 and the framepiece 4. The frame-piece 4 has the sides .thereof curved, so that said frame-piece will extend outwardly from the frame 3 of the buckle at its outer end, the above admitting of free play of the strap parts when properly attached to the buckle' The frame of the cross-bar 5 is made from wire, the ends of which are turned to form the loops or eyes 6, and said cross-bar is formed with an inter mediate loop 8, which admits of pivotal connection of a downwardly-swinging tongue 9 with the cross-bar. The tongue 9 is formed with a loop at one end, passing through the loop 8, and said tongue is adapted for pivotal movement toward and from one side of the frame 3. The frame-piece 4 is also provided with a cross-bar 10, which cross-bar is constructed similar to the cross-bar 5, being provided with loops 11 at its ends, which receive the sides of the frame-piece 4, firmly attaching the cross-bar 10 thereto. While the intermediate loop 8 of the cross-bar 5 is arranged at approximately a right angle to the frame 1, a similar loop 12, intermediate of the'ends of the crossbar 10, is located approximately in the plane of the frame-piece 4 and forms a means for pivotally connecting a relatively upwardly swinging tongue 13, which is carried by the auxiliary frame-piece 4, before described. The tongues 9 and 13 are movable in opposite directions and operate on opposite sides of the frame 3. The tongue 13 is formed with a loop 14 at one of its ends, which passes through the loop 12, affording a mounting similar to the mount ing of the tongue 9 on the loop 8. A keeper is applied to the frame 3 near one end thereof and consists of a transverse bar 15, having downwardly-extending end portions 16, formed with eyes 17, receiving the sides of the frame 3. The keeper 15 is designed to retain an end of the short line 2 in place with taching, and adjusting the same need not be I of the latter, a main cross-bar for the frame specifically described. It will be understood l that all of the parts hereinbefore set forth with respect to the buckle structure are made of wire which is bent into suitable form.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A cross-line buckle comprising a main frame of approximately rectangular form, an auxiliary frame-piece of approximately U form attached to the main frame, said frame-. piece having its sides connected with the sides of the frame at a point between the ends of the latter, a main cross-bar for the frame having its ends bent to form loops receiving the sides of the frame and the terminal portions of the sides of the frame-piece, said frame-piece curving away from the frame toward its outer end, a cross-bar applied to the auxiliary frame-piece, and oppositely-swinging tongues connected with the cross-bars of the frame-piece and of the frame.
2. A cross-line buckle comprising a main frame of approximately rectangular form, an auxiliary frame-piece of approximately U form attached to the main frame, said frame- 1 piece having its sides connected with the sides of the frame at a point between the ends having its ends bent to form loops receiving the sides of the frame and the terminal portions of the sides of the frame-piece, said frame-piece curving away from the frame toward its outer. end, a cross-bar applied to the auxiliary frame-piece, the main cross-bar being formed with an intermediate loop, a tongue formed with a loop received by the loopof said cross-bar and adapted for swinging movement toward and from one side of the frame, a cross-bar applied to the auxiliary frame-piece and having its ends bent to form loops receiving the sides of the framepiece and also formed'with an intermediate loop, a second tongue having pivotal connection with the loop of the cross-bar of the auxiliary frame-piece, and a keeper applied to one end of the frame and comprising a transverse bar having its ends projecting downwardly and formed with eyes receiving the sides of said frame.
In testimony whereof I afl ixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
