Description
fitte.
DAVID cLEMoNs, o1, scRANToN, DENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 83,041, dated October 13, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN'HAMES FCR HARNESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
.To all whom it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID GLEMoNs, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hames for Harness; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a portion of this specification, which is a front view of a pair of hames made according to myinven-ton.
' The object of this invention is to enable the haines 'to be more readily attached to or detached from the collar of the harness, than is found practicable with the straps usually employed in securing the haines in place when in use, and furthermore, to insure greater strength in the connection of the haines, when thus attached to the collar, than is generally secured' by the'aforesaid. straps; and tothis end, the invention consists in the combination, vith the lower ends ofthe haines, of a lever, hook, locking-ring, andchain, in such manner that the hames may be firmlyy clasped with any'desired degree of tightness.
To enable others to understand the nature and conf struction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it withreference to the drawings.
The hames are shown at A, and may be of any suitable construction. Attached to the upper end of one of these, in any desired number, preferably three, of links B, the outermost one of which should be so placed as to occupy a horizontal position when the haines are attached to the coilar-of the harness. Pivoted in the corresponding end of the other hame is a hook, C, the opening, af, of which is at the upper side thereof.
Secured to the lower end of one of the haines A,
preferably to that of the one furnished with the links B, as just set forth, is a piece of chain, D, and piv otedto the corresponding end of the other haine isia lever, E, in the lower end of which is pivotcd a hook, F. y Attached to the same haine, in suitable proximity to the lever just mentioned, is a iiattened staple, b, upon which is placed, so as to slide thereon, a ring, G, which being slipped over thelong arm ofthe lever E, holds the same in a position nearly or quite parallel with the adjacent portion of the haine, as shown iu'thedrawings.
In using the haines, the hook C is hooked into that one of the links B which will cause the upper ends of the haines to'be situated at the required distance apart, and the saidhames are placed upon the collar, which rests, of course, upon the neck of the horse in the ordinary manner, which being done, and the lever Elbeing disengaged iom the ring G, the hook F is hooked into the chain D at a greater or less distance, as may be required, from the end of the haine to which the said chain is attached, and the lever is brought back into position nearly or quite parallel with the hame to which it is pivotcd, as hereinbefore fully set forth,
thus straining the chain D tight, and bringing the hames snugly confined uponAthe collar, whereupon the ring G is slippedover or upon the long arm of the lever E,and thus holdsor secures the haines upon the collar.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lever E, hook F, and holding-ring G, in combination with the chain D and .the lower end of the haines A, substantially as shown and described,.and for the purposes specied.
Witnesses: DAVID CLEMONS.
