Be it known that I, FRANK ELWIN BRICK ETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Applying Adhesives, of which the following is a .specification.

My invention relates to devices for applying a thin film of adhesivesuch as paste, glue, and the lil eto a sheet of material which is to be affixed or pasted to an article, and it relates more particularly to a device for applying paste to the cloth or other lining of a shoe.

The object of my invention is to provide a manually-operated device whereby such paste or other adhesive may be applied to the lining of a shoe or to other objects in a thin even film without the use of brushes, pasting-rolls or mechanism.

My invention may best be understood by having reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification and which illustrate one of the numerous embodiments of my invention, although it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular embodiment illustrated, inasmuch as many modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my adhesive-applying device, and Fig. 2 is "a longitudinal section thereof.

In the figures, 1 represents a flat pan or receptacle, herein shown as rectangular, for containing the adhesive to be applied to shoelinings or other articles. It is to be understood, of course, that said receptacle may be circular or that it may have any other suitable shape and that it may be made of any suitable material.

Secured in any suitable manner to the upper surface of said bed 3 is a sheet of fine wire-gauze or porous fabric 1such, for example, as brass wire-gauze or burlap or other closely-woven materialthrough which the adhesive may ooze or slowly pass when the bed is depressed into the adhesive-containing receptacle. may be employed for said sheet 4, so long as it is not too closely woven to permit the particular adhesive employed from oozing through the same, and therefore I do not limit myself in this respect, inasmuch as said material will differ with the character of the adhesive used.

The shoe-lining or other object to which it is desired to apply a thin even film of adhesive is laid upon the flat surface 4, and the bed carrying said surface is depressed into the receptacle, so that the adhesive Will ooze through said surface and come into contact with the under side of said shoe-lining or other object, the latter being at the same time drawn along the surface 4 to insure a more even and thorough application of the adhesive to the same.

It will be obvious that' by my invention I provide a very simple and effective device whereby the object operated upon may be manually supplied with a much more even film of adhesive than could be applied thereto by means of a brush and also that as the level of the adhesive in the receptacle becomes lowered the bed 3 may be still further depressed until all the adhesive originally contained in said receptacle has been used.

Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. A device for applying adhesives comprising an adhesive-containing receptacle, a bed having a flat surface and carrying a closely-woven sheet of material constructed to permit the adhesive to slowly pass therethrough when said bed is depressed into said receptacle and elastic supporting means for said bed, said means being constructed and arranged to allow said bed to'be depressed into said receptacle.

2. A device for applying adhesives comprising an adhesive-containing receptacle, a reticulated bed having a flat Surface and carrying a sheet of wire-gauze, and means elas tically supporting said bed in said receptacle.

A device for applying adhesives comprising an adhesive-containing receptacle, a I bed having a flat surface and carrying a sheet sop is of. material constructed to permit the adhesive to ooze therethrough, and springs resting upon the bottom of said' receptacle, said springs being constructed and arranged to movably support said bed in said receptacle near the top thereof and to permit said bed to be depressed into said receptacle.
