IMPROVEMENT IN' SKATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE B. HOOKER, of the city of Rochester, lin the State of New York, have invented a new an useful Improved Skate; and I do hereby declare tha the following is a fu1l,fclear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specifica tion, in which- Figure l is a Vside elevation.
Figure 2 is a top View.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
lo enable those skilled in the art, I will proceed to describe its construction 'and operation.
On the rear end of any kind of skate, I pnt a post, B, on the top end ot'wllich l eut a thread and, put a 'jam-nut, G, and 'I also attach rigidly a heel-plate, D, y
on the top end, above the jaln-nut G.-
'lhe front part of the plate D has ariiang'e, a, and the ange has formed on it two or morespurs, b, made parallel with the plate D.
On the rear of the plate D, I pivot two clamps, G, which are adjustable transversely, and held to any desired position by the jam-nut C. There may be a washer put between the clamps and the jam-nut, if required, and the heel of the runner may be turned upwards so as to form the post. for the heel-plate, if preferred, and forni an elastic healing.
The object of this invention is to make an adjustable fastening for the heel of the'boct on the heel-plate of a skate. l
The operation is such that the heel of the boot, having slnall holes` in the front for the spurs b, they are entered on placing the heel `on the plate. The clamps are drawn up to the back ofthe heel, the jamnut C is then screwed up .to the parallel portion of the clamp, which is held firmly between the nut G and 'plate D, and the perpendicular portion of the clamp Gr holds the heel firmly, (in conjunction with the flange a.)

A skate, having a' heel-plate, D, with its flange a, and spurs b, in combination with the adjustable clamp G and jam-nut C, all acting conjointly, as herein shown, and for the purpose set forth.
