IMPROVEMENT 1N sursis.
rro ALL 'wHoM rr MAY eoNeEnN 4 y. y
Be it known that I, Quintus Buslinien, of West Chester, inthe county of Chester, and State of Pennsylvania.,
' have invented certain new and useful improvements in Skates, end that the following is full, clear, and exact the drawings.
description ot' thesarne, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, making a part of this specieation, in which- Figure 1 represents u.` top plan' of the skate.
Figure 2.represents'a side vien of the same as it appears when fastened tothe foot, shoe, orbocft.
' Figure 3 represents afview of the under side ot'- the heelof the shoe or boot showingthe device for fasten.
'111g the heel part of the skate thereto. i
igure 4 represents a section through the heel of -the boot or sboeand skate, to show the devicevfor holding the two parts together.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in thcseparate figures, denote likerparts ot" the skate in all My invention consists,
rst, in the double bends, curls, or. `springs at each end of, and as Vprolongations of, 'the runner of the skate, so that any ordinary weight on the skate will cause the curls o'r springs tojV yield only at Ythe Aextreme ends, and any excessive-weight or jar bring the inner ends of the curls or springs intoaction, and thus relieve the skater from-` any jar without impeding his motion en rough ice. 'And my invention further consists in placing a plate with an elliptical hole in it on the heel part of the skate, and
a screw` or stud, with an elliptical head, in the heel' of the boot-or shoe,`for the purpose`cf uniting that part of the skate to said 'boot or. shoe, so that anyone Vusingl the' skate may readily apply'to the heel of the boot* or shoe the scrcwcr stud for forming a part of the fastening atthat point, the otherpart being made as a `part of the skate bythe manufacturer thereof. a
To enable others skilled in the rt to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
The skate-runnerA is made of the form shown in'the drawing, fig. 2. At 'its heel portion it rises Vin n irer-` tical or arched direction, as Vshown at a, and is then bent over into a horizontal, or nearly so, position, as at 4b, and the end'bent around into a curl, as at e, the lower bend of said curl approaching very near to the top 'of th'c runner. The forward part of the runneris curved upward and backward, as at d, thence it extends rearward, as at e, 'and slightly bent downward 4or concave to `suit the ball of the` foot or boot,:and then curled around, as at. f, the lower-part of the curl being a short distance above the top of the runner. The' objectI of the bends and curls in the prolonged portions of the runner is, that with the ordinary 'weight of the skater the springzor yield shall be at the points and 2. But when running over rough ice th'ercis nnadditional yielding or springing motion at the points 3,and 4, and thus the skaterglides easily over rough ice Vwithout any jar or being impeded in his progress thereby. On the horizontal or slightlycurved portions be of the skate are fastened, respectively, the heel plate B and the sole plate C for supporting thej rear and front 'of the foot, boot,or shoe; and ao' these plates are fastened the straps g h z', the one,`g, for going up over the instep, andthoserh Vz', for passing over the forward part of the'foot., where they are fastened by buckles in 'the usual way.' On the front or. sole plate() tbereare adjustable side pieces D, with turned-up ends 7' for catching and holding the foot,4 to prevent it or the skatefrom 'moving .latex-ally; These side pieces are made adjustable by-means of thc slots c und set-screws Z in the usual well-known ways. V
Heretofore itl has been coiiimon-to put an ellipticallyshaped or headed stud on therskate at the heel,` .which was designed to pass through a similarly shaped hole in a plate fastened to `the heel oftheboot or shoe; s
l but without 'such a plate the fasteningnvas useless, and it could not be procured orput on by any one but a.
mechanic having the proper tools and skill to use them. I-obvlate all this difficulty by my plan of mn-kihg and using;` this heel fastening and support. And lf-do not simply change these male-and female fastenings froml the skate to the boot, or vice versa, but by a simple construction of one part-of the fastening, und that part'united to and made 'apermanent part of the skate, I make it within the capability of any one, ithou`gh not a mechanic,
4and withvonly such instruments as can always be found, to prepare-tbe heel of4 any bootor shoe, withverylittle trouble, so that it will unite with' the socket or platoon the skate 11s-follows: ou the heel plate b there isu raised circular socket', a, having an 'clliptically-shaped hole, n., in its top, the long diameter of the ellipse rdn-z yeter of the head crosswise of the heel, or at rifht angles to the long diaineter of y p of the screw, xrhentheskate is The Vhole o in the heel is made to'takein the soeket'm, and the hole n in the socket is u'tright ,alnigles vto the 'position it has when properly placedon the boot or shoe. Thenhy turning the s'kte a. quarter `round the diameter of' the screw-head rmd'elliptical hole are reversed, the long diameter 'of one fitting against the short diameter of the other, and so making a fix-n1 connection between the boot or shoe and skate. Y ff.
Having thus fully described-my lnvention, I'ivould state that Indo 'not claim bends or hows at the toe and heel portions of :L skate, nor do I claim the application of slprinvs independent of those madevby' a yeontinimti'm ofthe runner itself, these having been used. I I
But what I do claim ns my invention, and de'sirete secure by Letters Patent, isy y 4The curls cf, formed out'of the same piece es the runner, and arranged with regard to the heel and toe plate, und the runner, :Ls herein described and represented.
I also claim o. raised cirular socket m, on the heel plete ofthe skate, and furnished a, 'boot or shoe mey'etet 'mid turn in said socket to form'a.
fastening between the heel of the boot or shoe end the skate, ns herein described and represented..
