stock in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Ty e-Writer Carriages; an we do hereby (1801 21113 that the followin is a full, clear, and exact description thereo reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, and to the letters of reference marke specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sup orting means for the paper-guides; gui erollers, and scale-bar of a type-writing machine carriage by which auxiliary supports are provided for the said paper-guides, the guide-rollers and the scale-bar between the ends of the same, so that in extra long carriages said parts will be prevented from bending or flexing outwardly or away from the platen in the operation of insertin the pager into or feeding it through the mac ine.
ur improvements are herein shown as applied to the carriage of an Oliver type-writing machine; but the same may be ada ted to other machines to which they are app icable.
As illustrated in said accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in front elevationof the spar-carriage of an Oliver type-writing mac iine showing our improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the carriage, taken upon line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the central part of a lower paper-guide. Fig. 4 is a face view of the auxiliary supporting devices in the central part of the carriage, the same bein shown in face view and on a much enlarge scale. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail cross-section taken upon line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fi 6 is a erspective view of the holding-clip %or the ower guide-roller separate from the other parts. The arm K, arranged as described, with its end portion in contact with the bearing-surface a at the part thereof opposite or remote from the platen A, serves to resist the outward movement of the central part of the lower feed-roller in a direct ion away from the platen. Said arm K is made of spring metal, so that it acts with springprcssurc against the lower 'presser roller and enacts with the supporting-springs G G of said roller to press or hold the same yicldingly against the platen.
A device is mployed for supporting the entral part of the lower guide-plate H as follows: L is a secondary supporting-arm which is attached to the rear or free end of the arm K and extends forwardly and upwardly therefrom in position for bearing-contact with the bottom surface of said guide plate Il. Said arn'i L shown as shaped or formed to conform to the curvature of the outer curved or bearing portion is of the arm K and as secured to the outer or lower face thereof, with its forward end extending through a longitudinal slot 1*, formed in the said arm K between said curved hearing ortion In thereof and its horizontal part, w icll is secured to the cross-bar u. of the carriage. In order to hold the bearing end I of the arm L from shifting laterally on the guide-plate H, the stiffening-bar or rib h, which is usually provided on the bottom surface of said guidelate, is shown as provided with a notch h,

While the means illustrated for holding the scale-strip from rising or bending in its center embrace a clip attached to the bar C and a supporting-arm i on the carriage en gaging said her C, so that the said clip constitutes, in effect, a continuation of said arm F, yet the same general result will be obtained if the said clip be directly attached to or forms an extension of the arm 1 instead of being. made separate from said arm and connected with the same thronghthe mediunrof the said barC. A construction of this kind. referred to is shown in Fig. 8, in which N indicates an arm adapted to be attached to the frame-bar a in the same manner as the arm I", hcreinhefore described, and provided at its upper end with an integral upwardextension N, terminating in a horimentally-bent part which is provided near its rear end with a pin or stud 1t and which is adapted to extend to and engage the scale-strip l) in the same manner as does the clip 1. hercinheforc described. The said arm N is in this instance providcd at its side edges with rearwardly-bent integral prongs n n, located in position to engage the bar C, so as to hold the latter from rising, said prongs taking the place of the hooked upper endf of the said arm 1*. (Shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4.)
We claim as our invention- 1 The combination with a paper-carriage, a platen, a longitudinal paper-guide and a scale-strip, of a supporting-arm attached to a longitudinal member of the frame and engaging the paper-guide, and a clip constituting a continuation of the supporting-arm and adapted to bear against the scale-strip at a point between its cnds to hold it from springmg outwardly away from the platcn.
2. The combination with a paper-carriage, a platen, a longitudinal paper-guide and a scale-strip, of a supporting-arm attached to a longitudinal member of the frame and engaging the paper-guide and a clip which forms a continuation of the said supporting-arm and has interlocking engagement with the scalestrip.
3. The combination with a paper-carriage and a platen, of a longitudinal paper-guide arranged vertically in front of the platen. a scalestrip arranged horizontally over the platen and a clip attached to and rising from the paper-guide and having its upper end bent rearwardly and hearing on the scalestrip to hold the latter from bending or flexing upwardly at its central part.
4.
