Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
LYMAN B. STILSON, OF WOODLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND AUGUST LEIOTI, OF ST. ANTHONY, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,890, dated October 6, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LYMAN B. S'rrLsoN, of Woodland, in the county of Wright and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in MoWing-Machines 5. andI do.
hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part ot this specilicatiou.
A is the cutter-bar, attached directly in front ot' the main wheels by means of cross-pieces B B B B, which run at right angles from the bar to the axle, and are attached by hinges O C C C O.
The heavy end of the cutter-bar is supported from the ground by arm D and caster-Wheel E. At the light end it slides upon the ground.
F F are arms, to which pulleys are attached, by which the driver can raise the cutter-bar on meeting any obstacle not readily overcome by the natural playing of the bar upon the hinges C C C O O.
The lateral motion of the knife is effected by gearing similar to machines now in use.
The draft is applied by the pole extending to the rear from the center of the axle and restiu g upon small guidewheel G.
By this mode of connecting the cutter-bal to the axle and applying the draft at the center instead of at the side, the cutter-bar may be extended so as to out with the same power a much heavier swath than is possible with a side draft. It also permits the use of large wheels, four feet in diameter-a consideration of first importance in securing lightness of draft; but the main advantage is in the free. playing of the cutter-bar upon the hinges, the rising and falling at 'either or both ends, as occa-sion requires, thus adapting itself to uneven surfaces and running over any ordinary obstacles without the aid ofthe pulleys or any lifting apparatus.
I claim as my invention- The arrangement, in a front-draft machine, of the finger-bar A and bars B B, the latter hinged to the axle of the machine and connected with the bar A, as shown and described, and constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
LYMAN B. STILSON.
