VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED 0OT.25. 1902.
- UNITED srArEs PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs F. McELROY, or ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CONSOLI- DATED CAR-HEATING COMPANY, or ALBANY, NEW YORK.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 25, 1902' Serial No. 128,838.
Patented Aug. 7, 1906.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs F. McELnoY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in valves; and the object of. my invention is to provide a valve especially adapted for use as an end valve in a railway-car-heating equipment so constructed that the valve may be opened by the operation of a crank or handle and when opened or closed will remain in its position in spite of the jar attendant upon the movement of the car to which it is at: tached. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section of anend valve. Fig. 2 is a section along the linesX X on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spindle S.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The fitting A is provided with a port B, adapted to connect with a train-pipe (not shown) and with a port 0, adapted to connect with a hose to conduct the fluid to the adjoining car, said hose not shown. The valve D is arranged to close the port 0 and is suitably connected with the spindle S by means of a hinge E, secured at one end to the valve D, having its other end provided with an eye through which the spindle passes. Arranged adjacent to and projecting from the periphery of said eye are two shoulders F and G on opposite sides, respectively, of said eye. The spindle S passes intothe fitting A and has a handle S at one end thereof and a bearing in the fitting at the opposite end. On the spindle S, I preferably arrange a curved portion or hood T, partly enveloping the spindle, separated therefrom sufficiently to allow the eye on the hingeEto be placed on the spindle under the hood. The lateral edges of the hood T are adapted to engage with the shoulders F and G, respectively, on the hinge E. The location of the hood on the spindle is so adjusted in reference to the shoulders F and G on the hinge E that a quarter movement of the handle S will be made before the hinge E is moved. For this reason when the valve is closed, as shown by full lines in Fig. 1, the handle S will be raised to a vertical position and the hood will come in contact with the shoulder G. A further movement will lift the valve from its seat. When the handle is brought to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the valve will be opened to the full limit and will be held in position by the weight of the handle. By this arrangement, since the valve is not opened until the handle has passed the vertical position, there is no danger of the valve becoming unintentionally closed by the vibration or the ar of the car, as every movement will tend to cause the handle to assume a horizontal position and will therefore open the valve and-hold it open. In closing the valve the reverse operation is employed. The handle will be moved to the vertical position before it will engage with the shoulder F. A further movement will tend to close the valve and to hold it in a closed position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fitting provided with ports; a valve arranged to close one of said ports; a hinge connected with said valve; a spindle upon which said hinge is mounted; a projection on said spindle adapted to engage with said hinge after a partial revolution of said spindle; a handle on said spindle; said handle so adjusted that when the handle is substantially horizontal and extending from one side of said spindle the valve will be held closed by the weight of the handle, and when said handle is in a substantially horizontal position extending from the other side of said spindle said valve will be held open by the weight of said handle.
2. A fittingprovided with ports; a valve arranged to close one of said ports; a spindle; a handle on said spindle; a hood secured to said spindle; a hinge connected with said valve; said valve opened and closed by the engagement of said hood with said hinge after apartial revolution of said spindle; said handle when occupying a substantially horizontal positiofii lgliltiending frcim 011w scilde 05 said spin e o sai Va ve c ose an I when said handle gecupies a substantially 1 JAMES MOELROY' horizontal position extending from the op- Witnesses:

Signed at Albany, New York, this 2d day of September, 1902.
