BRAKE-SHOE PASTEiilhK.`
' Application filed January 1 To @ZZ whom, t may concern.-
Be ,it known that I, SAMUEL WEBB, a citizen of the United States of America,.residinor whic in a plied position videj a fastening at.Glassport,`in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new Brake Shoe Fastenings, of which the following isa speciiication. This invention relates to im rovements in means for securing detachab e brake-shoes to brake-heads, the object of the invention bein to provide a simple form of fastening wi firmly and securely hold the s'hoe andyet will permit of its rea y .removal when worn and the substitution of a new shoe. Another object of the invention is to proadapted for use in conjunction with brake-heads and shoes of the type old brakehead and app y a new one it is in common use and by which a shoe effectually secured to a vworn brakelhead, thus obvia-ting the necessity of discarding a complete brake-beam and equipment whenever the brake-head is worn, so that a shoe cannot be applied thereto through the medium of the fastening means now in common use.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section-0f a brakeeshoe and head connected by my improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modification of the fastening. Fig. 3 'is a detail view of the keyA and clip removed.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral i designates a brake-shoe of ordinary cbnstruction provided with channeled upper and lower ends 2 and 3 and having terminal notches 4 and `5, and 6 designates a brakeshoe of ordinary construction provided with end projections 7 and an intermediate apertured thereof.
In the ordinary construction now in common use the brake-head is provided with apertured lugs to fit above and below the lug upon the shoe, and a -key passes through these lugs and bears upon the projections 7 to hold the parts connected. The lugsupon the head are fre uently damaged or worn away, and when tqhis. occurs the brake-beam and its entire carded, as it is found in practice that in view of the amount of labor re uired to remove an .nearly as cheap to remove the beam carrying Specification of Letters Patent.

I beamiwith applied parts therefor, since the y discarded beam is melted and utilized as to provide a construction of fastening which wil even in the event of the heads being completely worn away or broken off and which willaccordingly permit of a new shoe beingconveniently and quickly fas'- tened upon the damaged heads by atraiiitools, thus avoiding the expense of high-class labor and the necessity asnow experienced o discarding brake-beams having -worn heads. To this end I provide a key 9, ongitudinally curved in the customary manner and ed to be passed through the apertured lug S. This key is provided with a hooked upper end 10, adapted to lie in the recess 4 and to engage the upper edge of the body portion of the brake-head, the lower end of the key being adapted to rest upon the projection 7 at the lower end of the shoe. Upon the lower end of the key is arranged a clip 11, apertured for sliding engagement with the key and provided with a lug o'r finger 12. After the applied key has been' engaged by its hooked end l() with the upper end of 'the brake-head the clip is applied to the lower end of the key and scrap. The main object of my invention rs- 'obviate the necessity of removing a beam lugs upon the brakef -hand or other person unskilled inthe use ofadaptadjusted to seat within the recess 5 and-t0 bring the lug i2 to bear against the rear surthreaded opening screw 13 to bear upon the vkey and fix the permit the brake-slice beingfapplied to and removed from a brake-head by an unskilled mechanic and in a short time without the use of tools and that it is not necessary in my improved fastening to employ lugs upon the brake-head. Hence a new shoe may' be firmly and securely fastened upon a brakehead on which the lugs have been worn to such an extent as to be unfit for further use or from which the lugs have been entirolybroken away.
