1h all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen T. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake- Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawings.
This invention relates to car brake-shoes of compound type that include friction or wearing members, which contact with the wheel-treads, and holders, which maintain the shoes on brake-heads. The invention provides means, as hereinafter set forth, whereby the shoe parts are held together in such manner that tney may be assembled and disassembled without injury to the holder. The two members thus associated form a unitary shoe, which is attached to the brake head in the usual manner of shoes in general use. i
The invention hasin view the provision of a brake-shoe that will be more economical in service than a reinforced or backed shoe of the usual form, which has to be removed and entirely scrapped when only a little more than half worn, because or liability of the wheel wearing through into the brakeehead and thereby damaging it. It is to overcome this objection that the shoe is formed in the particular manner contemplated by the invention and to make the backs or holders available for subsequent use on new friction or wearing members.
The brake-shoe provided by the inventio is simple to manufacture, its parts can be assembled quickly and easily and without the necessity of employing specialftools, and the cast wearing member can be cleaned of adhering mold-sand and handled and transported with l ttle liability of damage.

filed January 19,1918, discloses forms of brake-shoes, with similar objects in view, which threaded fasteners are em rleyed tem m am t e o d e nd We members together. The present invention is directed more particularly to shoes, for use on standard brake-heads, in which other means fixed permanently to the wearing members are utilized to maintain the parts ot the shoes in unitary association.
When read in connection with the description herein, the features of the invention will ings, forming part hereof, wherein embodiments of the invention are disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
lVhile the disclosures herein now are considered to exemplify preferable embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that it is not the intention to be limited necessarily thereto in interpretation of the claims, as alterations within the limits of the claims can be made without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
Like reference-characters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawings, of which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the brakeshoe assembled and in place on a brake- .head

malleable or otherwise suitably formed brake-shoe back or holder 4 secured to a wearing member 5, and 6 designates aretaining-key disposed in longitudinal openings 7 in the brake-head and 8 in the keeper, the key and keeper maintaining the shoe on thehead in a manner well known in the art.
In order that a worn wearing member may b em ed f m a h er an he la a ain u ed uc ess ely in s c tio t new wearing members, elongated lugs 9 of malleable or bendable metal are tired permanently in and project from the rear or head-abutting sideof the wearing member, for the purpose of locking the holder thereto. Each lug comprises a shank portion 10 in the plane thereof and in su stantially parallel relation to the axis of the shoe. The lugs preferably are arranged, as shown, in staggered relation on each side of the keeper,
The back or holder has correspondingly disposed slots 12, each of a length and breadth to receive fairly snugly the head of a shank and its lip before bending. When a wearing member and a holder are to be assembled to form a shoe, the lugs of the former are passed into the slots of the latter, and then the lips 11 are bent laterally away from, the slots and over the holder. The lower edges of the lips incline downwardly from the ends to the shanks, as shown at 11 and the lugs are just of such a length that, when the lips are bent, the inclined edges thereof will have wedging action against the holder and tightly bind it to the wearing member. When a wearing member has become so reduced by wear that it is advisable to withdraw it from service, the shoe is removed from the brake-head, and the lug-lips may be bent back to original position or broken off or the heads of the lugs may be sheared off, and thus release the holder, after which it is available for further service on other wearing members.
As disclosed by Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, the lugs may be formed integrally of a malleable sheet-metal reinforcing-plate 13 for the wearing member. Such a plate can be cut on lines defining the shape of the lugs, as shown by Fig. 4, and the lugs then bent outwardly to position substantially at right angles to the plane of the plate, as shown by Fig. 3. Thereafter the plate would be embedded in the wearing member during the process of casting thereof, the mold being so shaped and the plate so formed that transverse bearing-ribs 14 and longitudinally bearing-ribs 15 extending beyond the plate are provided as seats or protuberances to maintain the holder somewhat separated from the body proper of the Wearing mem- In a case where it is not necessary or desired to have a reinforcing-plate in the wearing member, or if it is not advisable to make the lugs a part of such a plate, separate lugs simultaneously cast in the wearing member may beused, as exemplified by Figs. 6, 7 and 8. Such a lug would have a foot16 extending laterally from the shank 10, for
the purpose of insuring its retention in the wearing member, and 1t would be surrounded by a bearing-boss or protuberance 17, for a purpose the same as of the ribs 14 and 15.
In order to relieve the fasteners of the shearing stresses imposed upon the wearing member by contact of the tread of a moving wheel, each end of the back is formed with a seat 18, which takes a correspondinglylocated protuberance 19 of the wearing member.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A brake-shoe wearing member arranged for association with a holder having a lug-receiving opening therein, said member having permanently embedded therein a lug comprising a shank extending from the rear face of the member and adapted to be passed through the opening in the holder and a lip at the free end of the shank arranged to be bent laterally to maintain the wearing member and holder together. i
2. A brake-shoe wearing member arranged for association with a holder having a lug-receiving opening therein, said mem her having permanently embedded therein a lug comprising ashank extending from the rear face of the member and adapted to be passed into the opening in the holder and a bendable lip at the free end of the shank having an inclined lower edge, said lip being arranged to be bent laterally and to cause said inclined edge to have wedging engagement with the holder.
3. A brake-shoe wearing member arranged forassociation with a holder having a lug-receiving opening therein, said member having permanently embedded therein an elongated malleable sheet-metal lug comprising a shank extending from the rear face of the member and adapted to be passed into the opening in the holder, and a lip at the free end of the shank arranged to be bent laterally to maintain thewearing member and holder together.
- 4. A brake-shoe wearing member are ranged for association with a holder having a lug-receiving opening therein, said member having a cast-in reinforcing element, a lug secured to and projecting from said reinforcing element beyond the rear face of said member and adapted to be" passed into the opening in the holder, and a lip on the freeend of said lug arranged to be bent laterally to maintain the wearing member and holder together.
5. A brake-shoe wearing member arranged for association with a holder having lug-receiving openings therein, said member comprising a cast-in reinforcing plate integrally formed with lugs project ing from the rear face of the member and arranged to be passed into the openings of the holder, and lips on the free ends of said lugs arranged to be bent laterally to maintain the wearing member and holder together.
6. In a brake-shoe, a holder having a keeper arranged to cooperate with a brakehead and formed with a fastener-opening,
and a wearing member having a lug comprising a shank permanently embedded therein and extending from the rear face thereof through said holder-opening and having a lip at its free end bent laterally over the outer face of said holder whereby said parts are held together.
7. In a brake-shoe, a holder having a keeper arranged to cooperate with a brakehead and formed with a fastener-opening, and a wearing member having a lug comprising a shank permanently embedded therein and extending from the rear face thereof through said holder-opening and having at its free end a lip with an inclined lower edge bent laterally into wedging engagement with the outer face of the holder whereby said parts are held together.
8. In a brake-shoe, a holder having a, keeper arranged to cooperate with a brakehead and formed with a fastener-opening, and a wearing member having an elongated malleable sheet-metal lug comprising a shank permanently embedded therein and extending from the rear face thereof through said holder-opening and having at its free end a lip bent laterally over the outer face of said holder whereby said parts are held together.
9. In a brake-shoe, a holder having a keeper arranged to cooperate with a brakehead and formed with a fastener-opening, and a wearing member having a cast-in reinforcing element, a lug secured to and pro jecting from said reinforcing element through said holder-opening, and a lip on the free end of said lug bent laterally over the outer face of said holder whereby said parts are held together.
10. In a brake-shoe, a holder having a keeper arranged to cooperate with a brakehead and formed with fastener-openings, and a wearing member comprising a cast-in reinforcing-plate integrally formed with lugs projecting through said holder-openings, and lips on the free end of said lugs bent laterally over the outer face of said holder whereby said parts are held together.
11. In a brake'shoe, a holder having a keeper arranged to cooperate with a brakehead and formed with a fastenenopening and a seat, and a wearing member having a protuberance disposed in said seat and having a lug comprising a shank permanently embedded in the member and extending from the rear face thereof through said holder-opening and having a lip at its free end bent laterally over the outer face of said holder whereby said parts are heldtogether.
