vvented certain new and useful l improvements iny Reinforced Lugs for: Brake-Shoes,
of which the following is a specification.
1..'My'invention `relates to aninproveinent lli in backs Kfor brakeshoes and more' pare' of -th'ebrake head againstfwhich they'im-- pinge, there being .more or less play between the brake shoe and head. In order to over1- '.'iccme this objection, the wrought metal lugv is sometimes reinforced by the cast metal i forming the body of thegshoe, a Awider or "broader surface being thereby presented to the depending feet of the brake head. This' y castinetal", however, .being brittle, is apt ,to bei cracked and broken away when the i shoe is in service and also during handling or transportation, the wrought metal lug "being thus naked to injure the brake head as above described.
vThe object of my invention is to reinforce the key lug of the shoe by the metalof 4U the lug"itself, oiuby the metal of the steel back, the surface of the key lug presentedv to the lugs or. feet on the brake head being of suficient width to prevent cutting lor' in-` juringthe latter, and alsoovercoining any and all liability of becomingv cracked'or broken away as in the case of the cast metal reinforce. l
l/Vith this yand other invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims. 4 l
In the accompanying drawings', Fignreyl is a view in perspective of a steel back slitted and bent to reinforce s key lug-,in ac- Specification of Letters Patent.

View in eross-section oi-a brake shoe having applied'th'ereto the.backiilustrated in Fig. 3 and with the keying assembled therewith. Figs. 5 and 6 are views in cross-section of brake slices illustrating the strap lug having its vertical walls formed of several thicknesses of metal and reinforced by the metal cf -the steel back. Figs. 7 and S are views in perspective of parts of a steel back formed like those illustrated in Figs. l and 3 but with the central portion of the back bent or stamped upwardly. Fig. 9 is a sectional view of a modification somewhat similar to that shown in F i g. 6, but with the upper portion of the lug reinforced.
Referring to the drawings, l may aecomplish the object of inyinvention by constructing the' back 20 as illustrated in Fig. 1, the same being formed of' steel or wrought inet-al, and preferably provided with the Qpenings'Ql through which the molten cast metal of the body may How to assist 'in anchoring theback at or adjacent to the rear surface of the body 22 of the shoe. Fig. 2. About midway its length, the back is slitted inwardly from each edge, the reinforcing pieces or plates 23 being 'struck upwardly at approximately right angles to the back 20, forming recesses 24, the height oi said reinforcing plates 23being substantially that of the attaching'lug, Fig. 2. This attaching' lug is made in the forni of a strap and bent to' fermi vertical sides 25, and a top plate-26, the sides25 ttng in the recesses Qand llavingvitheir eXti eine ends 27 bent under. and below-'the central'portion 27f`- of the back 20'lying between the plates 23, to
thereby vvsecurely.engage the lug with the back and'prevent'thev saine from becoming disengaged from the body of Athe shoe 22.
,In to preyentltliewends of the lug ,fr-:nnfsrztending too dee ly into the body oi" lila) the shoe, that portion o 4the back illustrated n at 2T, Fie. l, may be Vstruck cr bent upwardly as illnstrated'i', Fig. 7, and again insteadc haviiig the' back of one continuous ehrve asjillustratedn Fig. 3, the
central portion thereof may be struck or bent v'ilpwardly. as illustrated at.2 7, E`ig. 8, l
lor sides of the attaching lug,
this form of back permitting the ends of the strap lug to be bent and anchored under the central portion of the back and without extending too deeply into the body of the shoe where portions of the lu s might be worn away in service with said od As illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, instead of slitting the back from the outer edges inwardly, it may be so slitted as to form an opening 28 about midway the length of the back29, the metal between the slits being bent upwardly at substantially' right angles to said back 29 to form the reinforcing plates 30. In this instance, lug 31,*Fig. 4, will be passed down through the opening 28, and the extreme ends 39. of the sidesl 33 bent outwardly and under the back 29, thereby effecting a safeand secure lock withA the back, as in the first instance above describedyi" The'width of" the reinforcing plates in either of the .above instances will be equal to that of the width of the vertical plates in order that the edges `of said reinforcing plates andthe edges of the/vertical plates of the attaching lug will lie flush, lthereby presenting to the contacting. parts of the brake head (not shown) asurface much greater in area than .where the attaching lug is not reinforced. Should this surface, e ual inv area to the .combined thicknesses df the 'attaching lug and reinforcing plates, be notsuiicient, it may be still further hincreased by doubling the vertical sides of the attaching lug upon themselves, as ,illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.
In Fig. 5 the vertical sides 342 are bentl in- '.wardly and under the back 35 and'then up wardly to form'freinforcing plates 36,the"
said reinforcing plates 36 lying and terminating on the outer' side'or surface of the vertical sides 34. In' Fig. 6 practically the same Aconstruction is illustrated', excepting that the vertical sides 37l of the strap lug are bent inwardly under the back 38 and. then upwardly between the plates or sides 37 and the reinforcing plates v39, In both instances illustrated in surface of the reinforcedlu v.presented :to the contacting portionsof t e: brake head is equal to double the thicknessof-fthe at-IA taching lugplus the thiclmess of the rein forcing plates struck upv from-the" back, .a
surface suflicient to avoid the cutting orinjury to the brake head lbefore alluded# to.
the attaching Figs. 5 and 6, the
titl
sides of the lug in this instanceconsisting of the plates 40, 4:1 and 42, andthe top of the lug ofthe plates 43, 44, the side or rentical walls being of three thicknesses, and the top of the lug of two thicknesses.
It will be understood from the foregoing that wheny the back and lug are formed and assembled as described, the attaching .lug will present a sufiiciently broad surface to the feet or'lugs of thebrake head to avoid. any and all danger of injury thereto. Fui-, thermore, as b" th the lug and reinforcement therefor are formed of steel or wrought metal, all dangerv of thelcracking or breaking thereof, either in service or .luring the loading or unloading of the shoes, or transf portation thereof, is also avoided.
1. A back for a brake shoe comprising a. back proper, and a key lug made separate therefrom and attached thereto, the Vertical t walls of said key lug being folded backwardly upon themselves whereby to increase the surface of thel edges thereof.
2.- A ibackforsaebrake'shoe comprising a back propere-land a key lug made .separate `therefrom'andfattached thereto, the vertical `l`unallsfof#said key lug being folded hack upon themselves', andpreinforced b v the metal of the-bacio' proper. 3. Abackfor a" brake shoe having a key lug. made. separate therefrom and secured thereto, the-vertical walls and top of `said key lug being made ofaplurality of Alayers of metal, the vertical wallsof said lug bein reinforced by the metal of Said back.
