Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD LEHR HoovER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maximo, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in collars for personal wear of the turned-down type.
The object of the invention is to provide a collar of this type in which those portions directly exposed to contact with the neck are composed of a perspiration-proof easilycleaned material, the exposed portions of the collar being made of any of the fabrics commonly employed, such as linen, so that the collar may be kept in presentable condition and worn for a longer period than collars made wholly of linen.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the collar with the turn-down flap extended in the plane of the neckband. Fig. 2'is a rear view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections taken on the lines 33and44ofFig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A denotes a turn-down collar of conventional type, the same comprising a neckband 1, pro vided at its ends with inner and outer attaching or buttoning flaps 2 and 3 and a turn-down flap 4.
The neckband 1 may consist of any desired number of plies of material; but in every instance the inner ply 5, which constitutes the surface exposed to contact with the neck of the wearer when the collar is in use, is composed of some suitable readily-cleansable perspiration-proof material, such as sheetrubber. This ply is coextensive in length with the body of the band and the attaching-flaps 2 and 3. The outer ply 6'of the band 1 is composed of two sections 7 and 8, the section 7 being formed of rubber and of relatively shorter length than the inner ply 5. As shown, the section 7 extends from the outer end of the inner attaching-flap 2 to a point just in rear of the inner end of the attaching-flap 3 or in rear of the adjacent end of the turn-down flap 4, the section 8 extending between the latter-named end of the section 7 to the outer end of the flap 3 and forming the exposed surface thereof. The section 8 is made of linen or other fabric corresponding to that used for the ply 5 and folds over upon flap 2 when the collar is buttoned to the shirt. The turn-down flap 4 is preferably made wholly of linen or other suitable fabric, and the parts of-the collar are stitched or otherwise suitably united.
It will thus be seen that the exposed portions of the collar, consisting of the turndown flap 4 and the outer facing-strip 8 of the attaching-flap 3, are made of fabric, so that the collar in use will have the appearance of an ordinary fabric collar, while the major part of the body of the collar-namely, the neckband and those portions of the attaching-flaps which come in contact with the neck of the wearer and which are not exposed in useare made of a material which may be readily cleansed and which will prevent transmission of perspiration to the fabric of the exposed portion, thereby enabling the collar to be kept in a presentable condi tion and worn for a longer period than collars made wholly of linen or other fabric.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- A composite collar of the turn-down type comprising a neckband provided with buttoning-iiaps, said band consisting of an inner ply of sheet-rubber coextensive in length with said band and forming the inner faces of the band and flaps, an outer ply of rubber forming the outer face of the band and inner buttoning-flap, a short outer strip or ply of fabric forming the outer face of the outer buttoning-flap and extending inwardly beyond said flap, and a turn-down flap formed of fabric, the parts being suitably united.
