Be it known that I, GEORGE S. EMERICK, a United States, residing at No. 125 Osborne street, 'VVissahickon, in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Separators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machinery whereby relatively fine material of any description may be separated into further grades of fineness by means of the weighing action of air-currents in combina- -t1on with means for distributing said'mateu p b rial to the action of such air-currents by centrifugal force.
To accomplish this object, my invention involves the features of construction and combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a vertical section of the entire apparatus.
In the figure, A is an outer casing having the inner casing B concentrically disposed within and provided with the auxiliary chamber C. The rotatable hollow shaft D is mounted in the top of the casing A in the bearings E and actuated by the pulley F. Upon the hollow shaft D are mounted the fans'G, and upon the lower end of said shaft is mounted .the discharge-plate H. lVithin the hollow shaft 1) is located the non-rotary feed-pipe I, having mounted in its upper end the hopper J andsupported by th fran'ie K. The two features wherein my invention consists are, first, the cylindrical retarding ring L, whereby the material discharged from the plate H is prevented from passing to the of air above de nner wall of the chamber B, where the ascendingair-current has little or no opportunity to pick it up. The office of the retarding-ring is to hold the material discharged more completely in the ascending current of air, and thus contribute to fuller and more ready separating action of such air-current. The second feature of my invention consists in the arrangement of pipes N, whereby instead of drawing the supply of air from without the apparatus I am enabled to use the same air in a continuous current, the circuhv tion 0 air being shown by the arrows, usindiTa'tedin the drawing. The circulation of air in the pipes N can be controlled by the dampers O, and any tendency to a deposit of material carried in suspension by the air current along the horizontal sections of the pipes l is provided for by the cover 1, which consists of a removable section of the pipe N at a point where the accumulation of malc rial in the horizontal sections ol the pipes N can readily be reached and removed should such accumulation take place.
