It is to be understood that initially the carriage A is positioned at a articular-point by first operatin the genera releaseslever P and moving sai carriage tothe line where' the type-writer is to print. Ina type-writer,alon itudinally-traveling carriage, tracks which t e carriage traverses, dog mechanism carried by and travelin with the carriage and comprisin a plura ity of dog-carrying plates mounte in juxtaposition one with the other, a general-release device connecting with one of the dogplates and constructed to shift the same, and means for retaining the other dog-plate in normal position during the operation of the general release device, whereby advance movement of the carriage is prevented.

In a type-writer, alongitudinally-travelmg carriage, a track which is traversed by the carriage, a toothed member engaging said track, a shaft upon which said member is keyed, a ratchet-wheel also he ed on said to engage the ratchet-wheel and provided with a slot, a loose dog-plate alternate] in engagement with the ratchet-wheel and provided with a pin desi ed to work in said slot, a general release evice constructed to withdraw the loose dog from engagement with the ratchet- Wheel, and means for maintaining the loose do in position during-operation of the genera release.

In a type-writer, the combination with longitudinally-adjustable track-rails, a stationary supporting member for sustaining said rails at the rear, a longitudinally-traveling carriage constructed to traverse said rails, feed mec mittent spacing of said carriage on the rails, and an adjusting device disposed independent of said feed mechanism and constructed to effect longitudinal adjustment of the track-rails upon said stationary supportmg member.

In a type-writer, the combination with a flat laten, track-railsdisposed contiguous to and longitudinally of the same, a longitudinally-travelin carriage comprising supporting-standar 3 adapted to traverse said rails, ine-spacin mechanism disposed in said standards, irackets formed on said standards and overlying the platen, transversely-extending guide-rails supported on said bracket, and a laterallv-travelin carriage suspended on said guide-railsan constructed to be moved across the platen independent of the movement of the longitudinally-traveling carriage.

In a type-writer, a flat platen, trackrails arranged longitudinally thereof, a longitudinal] -traveling carriage comprising side standar 8 having an enlarged base portion to constitute a housing and provided with overhanging brackets, guide-rails supported by hanism constructed to effect intersaid brackets, and a transversely-movable carriage suspended on said brackets and in a plane in advance of the side standards, said carriage being constructed to have movement independent of the movement of the -longitudinallytraveling carriage, and said rails, and arranged to have travel, trans 'a longitudinally-traveling versely of the tracks.

In a type-writer, the combination with a longitudinallytraveling carriage, of tracks provided with flanges, said carria e comprismg standards having enlarged ower pen tions, and provided at their upper portions with overhanging brackets, rollers carried by the enlarged portions of the standards and engaging the flanges on the tracks, guide rai s supported on the brackets, and a trans= verselyqnovable carriage suspended from said guide-rails and constructed to traverse the same for letter-spacing.
