OF J ARROW, ENGLAND.
DIE FOR FLANGING PLATES.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
fication.
. is a plan of the lower die.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of dies for use in flanging plates for fitting into the spaces between the beams, stiffeners, or ribs of iron and steel structuressuch as ships, caissons, bridges, and the likeand relates more particularly to that class of dies which are adapted to be adjusted in size to suit the distance between the flanges which corresponds to the distance between the beams, stiffeners, or ribs;
and the invention consists in providing said.
dies with interchangeable facings according to the profile of the flanges which are to be struck up from the plates and to the general construction of the dies and facings and means of securing the same in place, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is preferably only used for plates requiring to be flanged along three edges; but it can be easily adapted to flange the four edges.
In the drawings the invention is shown as applicable to the production of flanges on plates which are to be fitted between bulbangles.
Figure 1 shows a plate flanged on three edges and fitted between two bulb-angles, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 2 shows a flanged plate fitted between two bulb-Ts. Figs. 1 and 2 are on a smaller scale than the remaining figures. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the upper or male die. Fig. 4 is a plan of the upper die. Fi 5 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 6 is a si e elevation of one of the filling-pieces of the die, showing also the means for attaching the die to the plate of the press. .Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation of the lower die. Fig. 8 Fig. 9 is a side elevation of one of the filling-pieces thereof. Fig. 10 is an end elevation of the lower die and 'of its attachments.
Each upper die is made up of two end pieces a and the required number of fillingpieces b, according to its length, in the known manner. A clamping-screw c, with right and left hand threads and squared ends for operation by a key or spanner, engages threaded nuts (1 d, housed in the end pieces a a, respectively, so as to draw the end pieces together firmly on the filling-pieces. The latter engage one another and the end pieces, preferably by means of steady-pins or dowels e. The end pieces a are also shaped so as to receive steel facings f and g of shapes suited to the profile to be given to the end flanges of the plate, respectively. The shapes illustrated are those appropriate to the plate shown in Fig. 1. If a plate similar to Fig. 2 is required, then the facing 9 will be similar to the facing If the plate is required to be left-handed compared with Fig. 1, then the blocks f and g are reversed end for endthat is to say, the facings g and f will change places. Each of the facings f and g are preferably divided on planes lon gitudinal of the die, so as to comprise two end parts and an intermediate distancepiece a. By replacing the distance-pieces 'u. a each by another of greater or less thickness the facings f and g can be used for pressing up flanges of the same external measurements on different thicknesses of plates.
h h are screw-bolts for fastening the facingsf and g to a.
v '0 represent the bolts for connecting to each other the two end parts of the facings f and g and the distance-piece a. One of the holes through the plates f and g, respectively, is slotted to allow for variation in the thickness of the distance-piece a.
j represents the bottom plate of the usual press-ram, with flanged brackets k bolted thereon for attaching the upper die to the press-ram, the flanges of these brackets fitting into the grooves Zin the die.
The lower or female die is similar in general construction.
m m are the end pieces of the lower die, and n n are filling-pieces therefor. There are two clamping-screws p, each with right and left hand threads and with squared ends, for the key or spanner and working in screw-threaded holes in lugs on the end pieces m.
g g are steady-pins or dowels.
1 and s are steel facings made to suit the profile of the beam or the like against which the flanges are to fit and corresponding with the facings f and g on the upper die, but allowing space for the thickness of the flange of the plate.
t t are screws for fastening the facings r and s to end pieces m. In the lower die the pieces 1" and s are made reversible, as in the upper die, and are fiXed by the screws t, which pass through the end pieces of the die. The base is also of sufficient breadth so that flanged brackets w can be used for holding down the die on the base-plate of the press.
By removing the facings f and g of the upper die and 1" and s of the lower die and replacing them by others of appropriate shape plates can be flanged to fit in between beams of other forms of profile, such as channels, T- bars, angle-bars, Z-bars, H-beams, bulbbars, and analogous sections.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
1. In a die for flanging plates the combination of recessed end pieces a variable number of filling-pieces, interchangeable facings according to the profile of flanging to be imparted to the plates, means for securing said facings in the recesses of said end pieces and a reversely-threaded screw having engagement in the end pieces, for clamping the end pieces and filling-pieces together.
2. In a die forflangingplates, the combination of recessed end pieces, means for spacing them apart and interchangeable facings according to the profile of flanging to be imparted to the plates,s aid facings comprising two end parts and a distance-piece together with means for securing said facings in the recesses of said end pieces.
3. In a d-ie for flanging plates, the combination of recessed end pieces, a variable number of filling-pieces, interchangeable facings according to the profile of flanging to be im parted to the plates comprising two end parts and a distance-piece, means for securing said facings in the recesses of said end pieces and means for clamping the whole to- 'ether. b 4. In a'pair of dies for flanging plates the combination of a male die having outwardlyrecessed end pieces, a variable number of filling-pieces, interchangeablefacings secured in the recesses of the end pieces, nuts housed in said end pieces, and a clamping-screw, of a female die having inwardly-recessed end pieces, filling-pieces, interchangeable facings in the end pieces, lugs on the end pieces, and a pair of clamping-screws engaging said lugs.
5. The combination with a press-ram and base-plate of a pair of dies for flanging plates comprising a male die having outwardly-recessed and laterally-grooved end pieces, a variable number of laterally-grooved fillingpieces, interchangeable facings in the recesses of the end pieces, nuts housed in said end pieces and a clamping-screw, a female die having inwardly and laterally flanged end pieces and laterally-flanged filling-pieces, interchangeable facings in the end pieces, lugs on the end pieces, and a pair of clampingscrews engaging said lugs, together with flanged brackets for engaging said laterally grooved and flanged end and filling pieces and fixing said dies to the ram and baseplate respectively.
6. In a die having a recessed end, the combination of two end parts and a distancepiece forming together a facing for the end and means for attaching the facing in the recess of the end.
7. In a die having a recessed end, the combin'ation of two end parts and a distancepiece forming together a facing for the end, screws for connecting the end parts and distance-piece together, and other screws for-attaching the facing to the. end.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
/ ROBERT JOHN WEBSTER.
