FOLDING CATTLE GUARD. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. s, 1905.

FOLDING CATTLE-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17-, 1906.
Application filed September 8,1905. Serial No. 277,627.
To all whom it wmy concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM RILEY HOL- COMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Downey, in the county of Cedar and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Folding Cattle-Guard, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cattle-guards, and has for an object to provide a device ofthe class embodying new and improved features of convenience, durability, and utility- A furtherobject of the invention is to provide a cattle-guard embodying improved means for attachment to the track and for removal therefrom to permit making repairs.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cattle-guard having interchangeable arts so constructed that when a part is damaged it may be removed and a new part substituted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cattle-guard to which is hinged the wing-fence in such manner that it may be swung away from the post to permit the cutting of vegetation or the passage of worktrains.
The drawing is a perspective view of the improved cattle-guard.
In its preferred embodiment the improved cattle-guard forming the subject-matter of this application comprises bearing-plates 10, having upturned ears 11 and secured beneath the rails 12 upon the cross-ties 13. Upon the ties 13 and between the rails are disposed the cross-pieces 14, hinged at each end to the ears 11, as by the bolts 15. Longitudinally of the rail flat bars 16 are secured to the cross-piece 14 with an edge turned up as a flange and serrated to form the teeth 17.
Without the rails transverse pieces 18 are hinged to the ears 11 by bolts 19, similar to bolts 15. Bars 20 with serrated edges 21, similar to the bars 16, are secured upon the pieces 18 longitudinally of the rails. To the outer ends or the pieces 18 are hinged substantially triangular-shaped side wings or guards 22 by the pins 23,.each wing or guard having its apex secured at 24 to suitable supporting-posts 25. The Wings or guards are provided with cross-strips 26, and secured to said strips are panels 27, which occupy the space between the wings and the adjacent posts, being detachably secured to the latter in any suitable manner, as by bolts 28.
i i I It will be readily seen that the bolts 15 adjacent either rail may be drawn and the middle section swung on the opposite hinge to permit the trackmen to work in the excavation. Likewise the bolts 19 or 23 may be drawn and the outer sections swung either way. Also the bolts 24 and 28 may be disconnected and the wing-section swung on the bolts 23 to permit the vegetation thereunder to be cut or to open a passage.
From its formation the entire structure may be made of metal, and the angle formation of the bars and guard-strips is such as to provide the maximum strength with the minimum material.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A cattle guard comprising bearingplates, an intermediate section pivoted to the adjacent ends of the plates, side sectionspivoted to the opposite ends of said plates, guard-wings pivoted to the side sections and disposed at an angle thereto, and panels car ried by the guard-wings.
2. A cattle guard comprising bearingplates, an intermediate section pivoted to the adjacent ends of the plates and formed of a plurality of spaced bars provided with teeth or serrations, side sections pivoted to the opposite ends of said plates and formed of similar toothed bars, guard-wings pivoted to the free ends of the side sections and disposed at an angle thereto, and panels carried by the guard-wings.
3. A cattle guard comprising bearingplates, an intermediate section pivoted to the adjacent ends of the plates and consisting of longitudinal bars connected by a plurality of spaced transverse bars having their longitudinal edges bent upwardly and provided with teeth or serrations, side sections pivoted to the opposite ends of said plates and provided with similar transverse bars, substantially triangular-shaped guard-wings pivoted to the side sections and disposed at an angle thereto, and panels carried by the guard-rails.
4:. In a cattle-guard, the combination with the cross-ties and rails, of supporting-posts arranged on each side of the track, bearingplates disposed beneath the rails, an intermediate section pivoted to the adjacent ends of the plates and resting on the cross-ties between the rails, said sectionsbeing formed of a plurality of toothed bars, side sections pivoted to the opposite ends of the plates and i formed of similar toothed bars supported on In the cross-ties on each side of the rails, inclined guard-Wings pivoted to the side sections and secured to the supporting-posts, and panels carried by the guard-Wings and engaging said posts.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as y own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
