To all whom it may con ern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LOVELIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ozan, in the county of Hempstead and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Cattle-Guard, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cattle guards of that type especially designed for use where fences or other inclosures are intersected by railway tracks, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a simple form of guard which will not be injured by the passage of cars along the tracks, which will act as an efficient means for preventing cattle from passing overthe track where the inclosure is intersected, and which can be readily installed by reason of its simplicity in construction.

YVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a cattle guard embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section through a portion thereof, said section being taken on the line AB Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the guard.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference F designates portions of a fence and R designate the rails of a track intersecting the fence. These rails R are supported on cross ties 1 having slots 2 extending downwardly thereinto, these slots receiving tie strips 3 of metal which are preferably parallel with the rails R, any desired number of these strips being located between the rails and additional strips being located between the fence and the rails. The upper edges of the strips 3 are preferably in the same plane with the top faces of the ties 1. Those portions of the ties between the strips 3 are preferably beveled as shown at 4, thus to provide ridges 5 extending along the ties except where the rails R are mounted on the ties and except the extreme end portions of the ties. Extending transversely through the strips 3 and under the rails R are rods 6 and pivotally mounted on these rods are flags or paddles 7 of such length as to extend some distance above the plane of the tops of rails R, the lower portions of the paddles or flags being thickened, as at 8 so as to over-balance the upper portions thereof and maintain the flags or paddles normally in upstanding position. These flags or paddles are held against lateral displacement by the strips 3. Any desired number of rods 6 and paddles thereon can be used, there being preferably one set of paddles between every two ties.

It will be apparent that when an animal approaches the opening in the fence through which the track extends, the moving flags or paddles 7 will operate to startle it so as thus to keep it away from the opening.

It will be seen that the guard constituting the present invention is very simple, as well as durable and efficient and is advantageous not only because of its comporatively slight cost but in view of the further fact that it can be installed readily and will not be injured by cars passing over it.

What is claimed is A cattle guard including cross ties having flat substantially horizontal rail supporting portions and intermediate portions formed with longitudinal ridges, there being slots extending transversely within the upper portions of the ties and disposed in parallel relation, metal strips extending downwardly into the slots and having their upper edges flush with the upper faces of the ties, transverse rods extending through the strips and between the ties, said rods being located below the uppermost portions In testimony that I claim the foregoing of the ties, and paddles pivotally mounted as my own, I have hereto affixed my signaupon each rod and between the strips, said ture in the presence of two witnesses.
